In 1997, I attended the release party for Kardi’s Eye & I at the Big Bop & met someone that has been an integral part of my life and my journey in entertainment, Jully Black.

For this post, I’m going to write to you - not about you Jully. I have watched you grow - from covering the Shirley Murdock (lol), to my favourite of all - “I’ve travelled”, a love letter to your Mom, but to ALL of our Mom’s who have come from far places to make us who we are today.

Your mother is so proud of you, today & always. I know, because my mother told me that she must be. All of my friends pour into me & I’ve taken pieces of the greats to try to make myself better - honour thy Mother is only one of the COUNTLESS lessons you’ve given me. (I learn from you).

We’ve cried together, laughed HARD - so many jokes (“I’m the trendsetta, wear you out like a sweata” Grimmy Grimmy!), provided counsel to each other.

Last week you calmed me, when my blood pressure spiked to dangerous levels over this music festival. (I appreciate you).

In my darkest hour, you’ve provided guidance (like the CTS headlights!)

On a dark day, one of my lowest, I spent my last taking groceries to an elderly person who was a shut-in (she wanted snapper, provisions & c**k soup lol) and dropped 3 of the new slippery $100 bills. Unsolicited (we hadn’t even spoken that week), you sent $300 out of the blue, a reminder of the power of kinship, kindness & belief. (I’m grateful for you).

You would never tell that story (many would wonder when I had just $300 lol - but WE know). I won’t wait (like Prince stories) to tell the world of your kindness.

Each year I’ve applied a different definition to you - growth, believe, intention - this year, purpose.

As I fight for equity in the music industry you’ve been there in lockstep. From singing The Black National Anthem at The BDRB Declaration signing to presenting us with our first ever award at CLMIA/CMW.

Always for community, this year you found renewed purpose & accepted ALL that came with it. Most will never know the price.

Sofinari has also performed at countless events across her home city of Toronto, and regularly makes appearances as the Anthem Singer for various teams in Toronto.
