A NEW STUDY INVESTIGATES THE HEALTH BENEFITS A VEGAN DIET MAY HAVE ON OUR DOG COMPANION’S HEALTH

Professor Andrew Knight and two colleagues have published a study to calculate the size of the health benefits that might occur for average dogs after controlling for age, s*x, neutering status, breed size and exercise level. Dog guardians for 2536 dogs completed a survey of the care of their dog over one-year eating conventional meat (54%), raw meat (33%), and vegan (13%).

There was a decrease in the seven general indicators of illness, and among the 22 most common health disorders, 11 were common in dogs fed conventional meat, 8 in dogs fed raw meat, and 3 in dogs with vegan diets. Dogs reportedly considered unwell by veterinarians were 39% for those fed vegan diets, versus 49% for conventional foods and 43% fed raw meat. The chart pictured indicates some of the key reported findings.

The study notes that dogs were not exclusively fed the study diet, and assessments were based on guardian opinions which the study tried to mitigate by asking guardians to report their vet's health assessments. Yet the study felt the findings were statistically significant, indicating a higher likelihood of true differences rather than random variation.

Prof. Andrew Knight stated: “Dogs fed vegan diets clearly had the best health outcomes in this very large-scale study, and these results are consistent with prior studies in this field. Nutritionally-sound vegan diets offer extremely large environmental benefits, so this is very good news for dog owners who want to protect the environment whilst also maximising their dogs’ health. However, care should always be taken to ensure diets are nutritionally-sound, by checking package labelling and purchasing from reputable pet food companies.”

Between working so much on devices, the uncertainty in the world, and keeping on top of everything else – it is very easy to get guarded around our heart centre at the front and back of the body.

This simple stretch can be done for 1 to 5 minutes to help us release, stretch through the shoulders and chest, and make room for more breath.

Nothing fancy is needed just a rolled or folded blanket or yoga mat - you can even do it on your bed for a gentler version:

1. Lie down with pillow/mat under head to based of the shoulder blades.

2. Find a position for arms and legs that does not strain neck, shoulders or back such as these options:
- knees bent
- knees bent and resting together
- leg straight, rolling out naturally
- legs straight with a pillow/blanket under knees
- arms open to the side with hands no higher than waist
- elbows out to side with palms resting on body

3. Lie comfortable for a few minutes – any strain in breath or body are signals you done this position long enough.

4. Bend knees and gently roll to the right off the blanket/mat.

5. Pause and take 3-5 breaths for the transition.

6. Sit up for 2-5 breaths.

7. Option – stretch, smile and shake! 😉😀

🌱 DRINKING SOY MILK INSTEAD OF COW'S MILK HAS BENEFITS FOR YOUR HEALTH BASED ON THIS RECENT SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS from our friends at University of Toronto, including our team member Dr. Laura Chiavaroli 💚

Better for your health and the planet. A no brainer.

Conclusions
"Current evidence provides a good indication that replacing cow’s milk with soymilk (including sweetened soymilk) does not adversely affect established cardiometabolic risk factors and may result in advantages for blood lipids, blood pressure, and inflammation in adults with a mix of health statuses. The classification of plant-based dairy alternatives such as soymilk as ultra-processed may be misleading as it relates to their cardiometabolic effects and may need to be reconsidered in the transition to plant-based diets."

🌱 MORE DATA TO SUPPORT THAT TYPE 2 DIABETES IS ASSOCIATED WITH MEAT CONSUMPTION

A new systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies just published supporting plant-based nutrition for prevention of Type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Title: Association between total, animal, and plant protein intake and type 2 diabetes risk in adults: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

Conclusions:
"Our findings indicate that long-term consumption of animal, but not plant, protein is associated with a significant and dose-dependent increase in the risk of T2D, with the implication that replacement of animal with plant protein intake may lower the risk of T2D."

A new report just out by Changing Markets Foundation: The New Merchants of Doubt: How Big Meat and Dairy Avoid Climate Action.

"This report shows the power of Big Meat and Dairy lobby groups, fighting across the world to maintain status quo, blocking climate action, such as dietary shifts and the adoption of alternative proteins".

"While tactics resemble Big Oil, which have now been widely discredited as harming public interest, Big Meat and Dairy
influence still flies under the radar, and they continue to benefit from agricultural exceptionalism."

"The climate science is clear: actions that we take in this decade will define temperatures and the world we live in for the decades to come. The livestock sector is both a significant source of GHG emissions and uniquely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change that are already being felt by farmers and ordinary people everywhere."

Available for download now! Dr. Matthew Nagra joins the Plant-Based Podcast again to break down a new review he and his colleagues recently published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology on plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) and their impact on heart health.
This review, which is linked in the show notes, is called “Animal vs. Plant-Based Meat: A Hearty Debate”, and looks at studies spanning from 1970 to 2023.

It explores the nutritional profiles of PBMAS compared to their animal-based counterparts and explores their effects on markers of cardiovascular health.

They found that compared to meat, plant based meat alternatives were: generally lower in saturated fat, higher in polyunsaturated fat, and higher in dietary fibre. They also found improvements in cardiovascular disease risk factors when meat was replaced with plant-based alternatives.

If you haven’t already, check out our other podcast with Dr. Nagra on episode two when he debunked common nutrition myths and misinformation, and on episode 47 when he discussed misinformation around the “Food Compass System” designed by Tufts University researchers.
