📽️ Special Screening - short experimental movie - Tropical Body - Projeto 4Seasons

In the midst of the pandemic, between life and death, a female Tropical Body finds itself trapped miles away from its natural habitat. How would she deal with the loss of a beloved father? How does she survive physically and mentally in such a cold, hard, and lonely place? Tropical Body – Projeto 4seasons () is directed by Patricia Azevedo (). The project is a short experimental film.

From this provocation comes the “Projeto 4Seasons” , with the performance “TROPICAL BODY” filmed at High Park/ Lake Shore Boulevard in Toronto, which was the place of contact for Patricia, creator of the project. The creation started from the observation of the passage of time, seen in the seasons of the year, giving rise to performances - Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall - with the body placed in front of the sensations caused by the environment of nature. Summer is the third video, part of Projeto 4Seasons - There was a big heat wave in the Summer of 2021, a lot of people died from heat stroke. The environment has drastically changed, even with the idea of people using less commuting, it was just an illusion that the world was getting better.

Patricia Azevedo is from Brazil and based in Canada as a dancer, producer, director, creator and performer of the Projeto 4Seasons. She spent part of her childhood between movements, performing and dancing in different styles. She graduated from Contemporary Dance by Angel Vianna Dance School and participated for the opening of Panorama Festival 2003 with Gustavo Ciriaco in City of arts.  She was the owner of Bellas Artes Guest House, one of the pioneers in the concept of cultural hospitality in Rio de Janeiro launching young artists in the performance, music, fashion and visual arts. Patricia has moved to Toronto in 2017, where she began developing Projeto 4Seasons provoked by social isolation due to COVID 19 Pandemic.

✨Special art installation throughout the building ✨

Three sisters (Abiola, Ama and Adjoa – names from largest to smallest) - together they form a family that is ever growing. Imagined and created as ancestor and trickster spirits, made to act as protectors, healers, teachers, and mothers to those who need covering and guidance. They embody elements of fauna, flora and human and speak to everyone who calls their names.

Medium: Crochet and embroidery
Materials: Wool, Cotton, Acrylic, polyfil stuffing, wood, wire, braiding hair (kanekalon)

Chason Adjoa Nana Yeboah-Brown (she/her) is a self-taught textile sculptor, doll maker and storyteller, exploring the oscillation of ancestral ritual through reconstructed, (un)woven and crocheted structures. Many of her works directly focus on themes of shame, loss of identity, sexuality, the notion and practice of “self-love”, hybridity, energy transference, and acknowledgement of the human form, with a primary focus on marginalized humans. Her desire is to traverse the interconnectivity CCD of these themes, and from those travels - be it through her inclusive dolls, personification soft sculptures or “safe space” creations, provoke more conversation and thought on communal awareness.

✨ SPECIAL PROJECT HIGHLIGHT ✨

Tote bags made of fabric samples

The past weekends at Underscore Projects were filled with fabric samples, sewing machines and laughs. We invited Michele Garcia () for the task of helping us making tote bags from fabric samples collected from architecture studios in Toronto (thanks to our friends at Toronto Circularity Network ().

The bags turned out great: unique and fun with all the imperfections of different textiles and size samples. We are very proud of our first tote bags and we will continue working on it! Come check out the tote bags during Do West Fest!

This initiative by Underscore and Plural Projects aims to bring up the discussion of the production of waste in our day-to-day. And we pose the question: how can we all reduce the amount of waste created in our art form?

Important Announcement
📣 We’d like to *officially* welcome Nicky as a member of Underscore Projects Studios!

Nicky Bruun-Meyer (MArch, OAA) is the founder of Plural Projects (), a full-service architecture and interior design studio with a focus on creating spaces and experiences for slower, more intentional living. For the past month, she has been setting up her studio and we couldn’t be happier with her pleasant company, great ideas, and her studio design choices!

At Plural Projects, they aim to create spaces that tell the story of their inhabitants, through the patterns of their daily lives, and the juxtaposition of personal objects and unique finds. They embrace a collaborative spirit with their clients, and act as a catalyst for better living. They create real spaces for real people, helping to transform clients’ ideas into spaces that inspire. While their aesthetic is effortless, timeless, and authentic, they’re not afraid to take design risks.

Nicky not only has projects in the neighbourhood, but also lives here and knows all about its great restaurants and shops. Don’t hesitate to say hi if you see her around!

This marks the beginning of our studio spaces being open for mid and long term collaborations. We have another studio that will be available soon.

Since its inception, Underscore Projects has always been about providing creatives with studio spaces where they could collaborate and get inspired. While we’ve had short term studio users, we felt a need of long-term studio members for further connection and collaborations.

Check out Nicky’s IG for her projects, design ideas and inspirational posts. Welcome to our community, Nicky!
