Isolation of the natural lashes can be one of the most difficult techniques for a lash artist to master.

Our job is to cleanly isolate every suitable natural lash so that we can attach an extension to it. Failure to correctly isolate the natural lash will lead to “stickies”, a term used when an extension or natural lash is attached to a neighbouring one. Stickies are bad news for lash health due to the natural growth patterns of the lashes, which can lead to being prematurely pulled out when a lash sheds causing long term damage.

Learning how to isolate the many different types of lashes you will see on your clients just takes time.

There is no shortcut to mastering the technique other than practise, practise, practise.

We will NEVER reach a point in our careers where we won't have retention issues of some sort. It's just the nature of our jobs as a Lash Artist.

But a great Lash Artist can troubleshoot these issues. Here are some things for you to consider:

1. Are the extensions coming off with/without the NL attached?
* WITH, suggests the clients natural cycle or they're pulling them out or rubbing eyes/face when sleeping
* WITHOUT, consider:

- Your enviro – Temp/humidity?
- Glue – How old is it? How long has it been open? Are you using it correctly? Has it been stored correctly?
- Did you cleanse/rinse the lashes before lashing?
- Are you using a primer? Why? Is it really needed?
- Are you using a sealant? Why?
- Have you recently decorated/painted?
- Do you share a working space in a hair salon/sunbed salon?
- Are you nano misting? Are you using it correctly/in the correct conditions?
- Does your client have a hooded eyelid? Are the extensions in constant contact with the skin oils?

In the lash industry, we will inevitably at some point have a situation where a client will react to something we have used on them in some way. But how do we figure out what it is that has caused this reaction?

Here are a few tips to help you 'diagnose' an eye injury:

𝔸𝕝𝕝𝕖𝕣𝕘𝕚𝕔 ℝ𝕖𝕒𝕔𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤
* ᴘʀᴇꜱᴇɴᴛꜱ ᴀꜱ... itching, redness, or general discomfort within 24hrs (rarely up to 72hrs) of application
* ɴᴇxᴛ ꜱᴛᴇᴘꜱ... refer back to their doctor for further follow up. The client can take antihistamines to help reduce swelling/ itching/ redness/ general discomfort. Thereafter, assess if client can tolerate a full removal of the extensions or if you should wait a few more days before a removal and deep cleanse

𝕌ℕ𝔻𝔼ℝ 𝔼𝕐𝔼 𝕋𝔸ℙ𝔼 𝕆ℝ ℙ𝔸𝔻 𝕊𝕂𝕀ℕ ℝ𝔼𝔸ℂ𝕋𝕀𝕆ℕ
* ᴘʀᴇꜱᴇɴᴛꜱ ᴀꜱ... Dry skin or hives/general skin irritation under the eye where eye pad/tape normally placed
* ɴᴇxᴛ ꜱᴛᴇᴘꜱ... should subside on its own after a few days but client can take an antihistamine to reduce the inflammation/ irritation to the skin. It is best not to put anything directly onto the skin at this stage. After a few days, a gentle moisturizer can be applied to the area to aid healing.
