On May 23rd at 7PM EST, join us for a special lecture with artist Carolina Caycedo!
In this lecture entitled "Scintillae on Earth", Caycedo will focus on her recent works which emerge from her ongoing spiritual fieldwork and research on the eco-social activism of frontline communities impacted by the climate crisis, and the demand for a Just Transition. In opposition to the Western extractivist approach to energy production, she explores ways of being on Earth that foster sustaining and caring relationships with material and social landscapes.
Caycedo channels ancestral understandings of the scintillae (tiny sparks) that cycle from cosmos to Earth, tracing constellations of meaning through the talismanic properties of certain objects, reciprocal practices of payment, and the invaluable labor of women in sustaining community life and the environment. She proposes works with the power to protect, heal, and transmit knowledge.

In this lecture entitled "Senti-Pensando Art & Praxis", Gómez-Barris will focus on how to think beyond the colonial Anthropocene in part through senti-pensando or ecological modes of feeling and thinking that exceed the binarized form of Western knowledge production. By thinking with a range of film, media, art and performance practices, and the color, she considers anti-extractive modes of representing and imagining decolonized life.

On January 25th, Sur Gallery reopens with "Tracing Labor Territories"!
This exhibition deconstructs the politicized spaces that lie between territory and labor, outlining the imperial and colonial relationship of the North and the South. Four artists listen and interpret migratory flows between borders, they shift the margins and narratives with various artistic proposals and mediums. From photography to video installation to sound art, Anahí González, María Hoyos, Martín Rodríguez, and Victor Vargas offer counter-narratives and a perspective of the migrant worker who is often marginal, silenced, exploited, and erased.
"Tracing Labor Territories" is curated by Mariza Rosales Argonza and Tamara Toledo.
