A few years back I got a request from a client for this ring. I showed her both 5x2mm black diamonds and 4x2mm. She selected the 5x2s, but once the ring was almost complete, she had second thought, saying it was too much black… 😮💨
Custom work can be tricky like this… sometimes what you think you want, isn’t actually what you want. So I went back and ordered her the 4x2mm stones and made her a new wax and ring…
But now I was left with this ring that was 90% done with no one to go to, so why not just finish it and add it to inventory? Well, I did that, but I don’t think the process was very zen. Haha there were slight changes made to the second model the made setting the stones much easier. After all that I went through with this ring, I suppose it we needed a bit of a break from each other! Haha so years later, I’ve pulled her back out and am ready to give her the facelift she deserves.

Day 6: Finally Made it to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat! This is definitely a place that you need multiple days to explore especially in the extreme heat! The walls tell many tales and there are guides around to help you decipher them. I have to say that having a very Cambodian Name has come in handy on this trip! Day 5: Spent the day in Pursat, which is considered the countryside according to my mom. We saw a lot of free range animals and lush trees. The area around these homes was called “waterless lake” I asked if it filled with water during rainy season (they are currently in a drought), and everyone said, “no never!” Which then left me walking behind these new family members with my limited Cambodian vocabulary thinking “Why is it called a lake if there is no water?” 😓 #languagebarrier #englishspeaker #cambodia #familyvisit #ruralcambodia #cambodiatravel #khmer #pursat
Day 4! Volume up to hear about Kampot Agriculture. My family loves visiting farms and orchards. My mom points out all the trees, and those she doesn’t recognize, she will stop and ask locals. We are greatly thankful for our privilege. Turn up the volume if you would like to hear my stories! Bokor Hill station was a popular vacation spot, frequented by royals! The area was steeped in colonial French influence. It was abandoned in the 70’s when the Khmer Rouge took over. It was one of their last strong holds, serving them into the early 1990’s. Ps I hope I don’t get struck by lightning because of what I said about the diety on the hill 😬. Hopefully my mom’s charity work will save me! After a full day of travel I’ve united with my family in Phnom Penh. The temperatures are in the high mid 30’s (Celsius!) and the traffic is nuts. Apparently the trick to crossing a street is just to cross and keep pace, traffic will stop or go around you, but don’t stop, hesitate or change your speed- commit! Me: (looking into the showcase and seeing a silver ring that cost $100 next, to a gold band that cost $400, next to a diamond band that cost $2500, next to an engagement ring that cost $8,000+…. ) “Ahhh.. Well, it depends on what you want made. I do custom work, so I usually ask for a design direction and budget. This will help me suggest the right gems and materials needed to create the piece you want within the budget you have given.” Of course, each ring in my showcase is ready to wear, so if there is a particular one you want, exactly as is, with maybe just a ring size change, ask specifically for the price of that ring. I have to admit, telling your clients that the ring can’t be size and leaving a gap which allows the ring to be adjusted leads to a happier client in the future, because expectations are properly set, but I am here to tell you that there are some styles that can be adjusted a bit without having to remake the ring. I find renderings can sometimes hinder more than they help. They are computer generated images of the model or wax, not of the finished piece. This does mean that the contrast between metal and stone can be quite jarring. The edges very sharp and square lacking the softness that hand finishing creates. The way the light shines off the stones and metal also add a lightness that can’t be seen in the computer images. What do I advise? Choose a jeweller you trust! Make sure you consistently like their work and overall collection. Focus more on proportions. Remember and recall what the real jewellery piece looked like when you viewed it or tired it on. Ask a lot of questions about the weight and size and finish. Remember that you are viewing the images on computer screen and it is a hundred times bigger than it will be in real life.
