The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has one of the most interesting facility. It is where bend the railways for the street cars. It is here, where the canopy had been completely overtaken by city pigeons. In this video I explain how Pigeon Busters can help keep work yard, shipping and loading area overhead canopies bird proof.

In this video I talk about how Pigeon Busters can help to maintain the integrity of sensitive heritage buildings by protecting them from the negative effects of the ever-growing urban pigeon population.

In this video I explain to property managers and building owners how to protect their rooftop cooling towers and HVAC units from pigeons establishing their habitat.

The cheapest way to provide access through bird netting is using zippers. A more expensive option is a custom fabricated trap door.

HOSPITAL ROOFTOP UNIT 04/06/2020

Lakeridge Hospital in Oshawa has become one of our largest clients, where we completed many very challenging jobs that were seriously very complex.
This project was one of those as well. Similar to the “Stairway Netting Project”, we had to custom fabricate everything to be able to install exclusion netting on this new supply unit on the roof. This equipment was so critical that it had to receive the netting immediately after it was installed, any possibility of a pigeon infestation was ruled out and was not allowed.

Projects like this are very detail oriented and usually the preparation takes longer or the same amount of time as the installation itself.
Each piece of component is custom fitted to existing site conditions and the structure.

We created a complete enclosure, including two fully functional doors and a netting skirt around the bottom to prevent entry underneath the unit.
All components were made of galvanized steel to match the existing structure.
2” netting was installed on the support custom fabricated support structure and framework to completely deny access to pigeons at all areas of the unit.

This method can be applied on almost any roof top unit to prevent pigeons from causing damage to sensitive and expensive machinery.

HUGH SISLEY HONDA #2 04/06/2020

When it comes to the amount of spikes installed on a single property, Honda Sisley is number one.
This beautiful property was designed with double walled signage with large space in between, that are completely open from many angles. This signage configuration is the perfect nesting spot for pigeons. Hundreds of pigeons had made the signs and the ledges of this building their home. They completely despoiled the entire front facade of this dealership.

Pigeon Busters was, again, called in to end this nightmare.
We strategically installed spikes on and round the signs and then protected all remaining - existing and potential - areas of the entire building.

Can you believe that some people still think that spikes don’t work?

AESTHETIC NETTING AT BUILDING ENTRANCE 04/06/2020

About a year after Pigeon Busters installed balcony netting on the entire building, we were called back to address a sparrow problem at the very busy, rear entrance of the building.

The building owners tried using a variety of bird spikes, but to no avail - unfortunately bird spikes are only effective for pigeons and larger birds. Sparrows can easily build their nests in spikes, because they are much smaller than pigeons.
The only solution was to install 3/4” square netting - made for sparrows/smaller birds, so they can’t go through the netting - installed above the entrance area. The odd shape of the area was further complicated by pipes running in all directions, these needed to be avoided and provided access to at some locations, in case of maintenance.

Our approach was a method we used before many times. Custom fabricated support poles that could be mounted to the ceiling to facilitate the netting installation in a position that cleared the pipes and followed existing geometry to achieve a clean, professional look.

SPIKES ON PRIME CORNER PROPERTY 04/06/2020

You always wanna be extra careful when you work for a group of lawyers in Yorkville, downtown Toronto, because if you make mistakes you know you will be back to fix it, so its better to do the job perfectly, right the first time.

The battle with pigeons on this prime corner property had been going on for awhile, there were lots of spikes installed, but the problem was just not going to go away. That’s why Pigeon Busters was called in.
Even though spikes were installed previously, they were not installed properly and when it comes to spikes its all about precision and strategy.
After a big cleanup, we removed all the old spikes and installed the new, proper type spikes to protect all existing and all potential roosting spots. Some of these areas were very hard to reach, even with an articulating boom lift, but with careful planning and using the right equipment these challenges can be safely overcome.

COOLING TOWER ENCLOSURE 04/06/2020

These roof top cooling tower enclosures provide the most ideal structure for pigeons to establish their nesting and roosting habitat. These units are usually well protected from the sides and the heat generated around the unit provides the perfect nesting conditions for pigeons throughout the year.

On these buildings, the units were housed in a concrete, open-top and open-bottom enclosure, which allows for the proper mounting of the bird netting hardware. All openings on the top and along the bottom were closed off using 2” bird netting.
We also installed custom fabricated entry doors, which are critical for easy maintenance access: workers don’t have to use zippers and squeeze through small openings in the netting and risk damaging it. The use of a proper door through any netting installation is highly recommended to avoid damaging the netting.

Along the bottom there were many structural features that were addressed individually using bird netting. Sometimes this can be very meticulous, but it is necessary to ensure that pigeons will not be able to find any entry points, otherwise the work can be compromised.

TALL BALCONIES 04/06/2020

Another one of those projects where previous installers failed or walked away and Pigeon Busters had to be called in.
For a good reason. These pair of balconies were designed in a very odd shape with large columns at the ends, where parts of the balcony simply cannot be reached.

But Pigeon Busters resolved this issue and installed 2” bird netting with a 10-year warranty.

BUILDING FACADE LEDGES 04/06/2020

The facade of this building has architectural features that are the perfect nesting as well as perching spots for pigeons. Wide, long ledges that semi-sheltered along the front and completely protected from the elements further back along the windows.

The building owner have tried many solutions before, including scented pods and sticky gel. Nothing worked.
Pigeon Busters was called in to solve the problem once and for all. After a thorough cleaning, we used multiple rows of Bird Spikes on all of the ledges.
The spikes are barely noticeable from the ground, so they don’t disturb the otherwise clean and simple design of the facade.
Another great project on the list of successful spikes installations.
