Today marks the 10th anniversary of Children and Youth in Care Day. Children and Youth in Care Day is an opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions of current and former youth in care to communities across Ontario. It is also a time to acknowledge the strength and resilience shown by young people who are living with extended family, friends or in foster or group care. At any given time, JF&CS cares for approximately 30 Jewish children and youth who are not able to safely live with their families of origin. “These are children from our community and it is of utmost importance that a Jewish lens and Jewish values underpin how we ensure all of their needs are met,” says Cilla Archa, Program Manager of JF&CS’ Children in Care and Resource Services team. Research indicates that outcomes for youth who exit the child welfare system are poorer compared to the general Canadian youth population, as shared on the Ontario government webpage. “Our goal at JF&CS is to ensure that all facets of our children or youth’s lives are explored, attended to, and enhanced, so that we can support them to reach healthy futures and successful outcomes,” adds Cilla. JF&CS is proud to be partnering with UJA and our community in a Solidarity Rally for the hostages in downtown Toronto. Raise your voice for the freedom of the 240+ innocent people held captive in Gaza. Unite with Jews and allies from various communities to take a stand for human rights and dignity. For security reasons, UJA will be releasing the specific location of the rally later this week. We will post a follow-up message here with the location details. March break is upon us, which means plenty of fun activities to fill our time! JF&CS is currently providing emergency medical and dental assistance to 80% of Holocaust survivors living in poverty in the GTA, but we need your help to offer them further support. Our team helps clients navigate the healthcare system and works alongside their care providers to offer integrated and collaborative care. Food insecurity is a symptom of poverty. At JF&CS, we aim to lessen the burdens experienced by low-income households, such as food insecurity, unstable housing, and stress.
