2024 Keynote Speaker:

Steve M. Easterbrook is the Director of the School of the Environment at the University of Toronto, where he teaches courses on environmental decision-making, systems thinking, and climate literacy. He received a PhD in Computing from Imperial College London in 1991. In the 1990s, he served as lead scientist at NASA’s Katherine Johnson IV&V Facility in West Virginia, where he worked on software verification for the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. He has been a consultant for the European and Canadian Space Agencies, and a visiting scientist at many climate research labs in the United States and Europe.

His recent book, Computing the Climate (Cambridge University Press, 2023) explains how the scientific community reaches the conclusion that climate change is an emergency. It tells the story of climate models, tracing their history from nineteenth-century calculations on the effects of greenhouse gases, to modern Earth system models that integrate the atmosphere, the oceans, and the land using the full resources of today’s most powerful supercomputers. Drawing on his extensive visits to the world’s top climate research labs, this accessible, non-technical book shows how computer models help to build a more complete picture of Earth’s climate system.

Last year, 2023, was by far the hottest year in human history. Wildfires burned out of control across the planet, forcing the evacuation of entire cities. Flash floods, drought, and extreme heat events were reported around the world. Tens of millions of people have been displaced and the global cost of climate impacts is estimated at $400 million per day. Yet action on climate change around the world still falls far short of targets set by the UN, and even these targets are inadequate in the face of current scientific analysis of future climate impacts. The irony is that all the clean energy technologies needed to address climate change already exist, and in many cases are already cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives, especially when you factor in the co-benefits such as cleaner air and lower healthcare costs. Governments and corporations are simply not moving fast enough to deploy them.

Have you ever wondered how and why your data is collected as a member of the University of Toronto community? Are these two-factor authentications getting on your nerves? Does U of T use my data like social media platforms do?

Join the Hart House Student Debates & Dialogue Committee for a Town Hall with members of the University of Toronto's own Information Security Team where they seek to educate the student body on why certain security measures are in place and what it means for our data, as well as to hear your concerns and questions about how they protect you in cyberspace and how you can do the same. This is a unique opportunity to get a look into the "behind-the-scenes" of data storage and collection, the protection of your data, and how to prevent unauthorized usage of your personal information.

Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to learn from and voice your concerns to your very own Information Security Team!

"Greetings everyone! My name is Fatir Hameed and I’m a third year student at University of Toronto. I’ve been affiliated with the committee since three years and it has provided me with continuity in finding expression, dialogue and strengthening my understanding of the importance of platforms such as HHSDDC. Along with my Co chair and the amazing team we have, we hope to deliver students around campus with the opportunity to speak their thoughts, polish their train of thought and induce curiosity as the committee has done for me. I’m really excited for the upcoming year and I hope with the help of the student community, we can raise dialogue and continue the long-standing tradition of a vocal student body at University of Toronto."

"I'm a fourth-year student at UofT, double majoring in Economics and International Relations and minoring in Mathematics. As the Chair of the Committee this year, I am excited to build on the Committee's success and create ethical spaces for dialogue and dissent. As is tradition, I hope to include underrepresented and marginalised voices in the most pressing topics of today. I joined the committee over two years ago to create an inclusive space for contribution and intersectional social advocacy. In this time, I have developed a sense of belonging with the committee and its causes- I have been provided with a space to grow my knowledge, skills and understanding of complex issues. The committee has also allowed me to experience the tangible impact of the events we host. My hope for the committee this year is to establish empathetic dialogue that can offer students interdisciplinary spaces to engage in constructive dialogue that can positively impact our ideological landscape. I look forward to welcoming new members and engaging diverse perspectives in the programming for this year!"

About Us

Established in 1919, the Hart House Debates and Dialogue Committee (HHDDC), has been deeply involved in enriching student life at the University of Toronto for over a millennium. Today, it continues to provide University of Toronto students with opportunities to discover and develop their capacity for leadership, self-expression, and communication.

To do so, the Hart House Debates and Dialogue Committee organizes events in which important topics of the day are discussed and explored. Founded on the mission to protect and uphold the principles of free speech and debate in Canada, the HHDDC has hosted leaders in every field, including heads of state, senior Cabinet officials, filmmakers, business leaders, activists, poets, policymakers, and philanthropists. Some of our most notable speakers include John F. Kennedy, Adrienne Clarkson, Noam Chomsky, John Turner, Brian Mulroney, John Tory, Margaret Atwood, Christopher Hitchens, Marie Henein, and Atom Egoyan.

More recently, the Hart House Debates and Dialogue Committee has moved beyond traditional economics and foreign policy discussions to engage a more diverse set of audiences; those interested in issues within arts, sciences, technology, social justice, and the environment should find a home with us. Whether it be in the form of large panel discussions, keynote addresses, or more intimate and experiential sessions, students and community members alike are invited and encouraged to participate in the dialogue.

Always student-curated and organized, our events provide committee members and volunteers valuable lessons and hands-on experience in navigating the pressing issues of their day. The committee also maintains its shared roots with the Hart House Debating Club, working hand-in-hand to provide enriching debating opportunities for students. In addition to hosting an annual Alumni Debate, the HHDDC also assists the Debating Club in the selection of students to represent Hart House in the World University Debating Championships.
