I saw a beautiful travel reel from Barcelona, Spain by and instantly decided to paint this magnificent street in watercolors. Although, this is my first attempt to paint architecture using this medium, I think it turned out not that bad. The extreme perspective, relative scales, and light-shadow directions were really tricky to get right here. I struggled a lot and that struggle is quite visible in this painting. Still learning through a lot of tutorials by great experts and trying to improve my technique. Creating an illusion of details and creating a smooth flow of watercolors is something that I am still very far from. I will reach there eventually. Let me know what you think. 😊

For a long time, I had this picture in mind that I had captured a few years ago at Anjuna beach, Goa, India. Over the last weekend, I gathered all the courage, watched a lot of tutorials about painting sea waves and coconut trees using watercolors and finally painted it. I think I achieved the desired result here especially for the splashes. However, the coconut trees could be a lot better but I am not worried about that as I could atleast stop myself from putting lot of details in the background. And yes I did cheat with using White acrylic to get those tiny droplets 🙃 but who cares! Let me know what you think about this one. 🌴🌊

Another result from my watercolor practice sessions. This time I picked a scene from my Armenia tour. Things are getting better I feel and more watery but still so much to learn. I really need to break my habit of adding unnecessary details. Also I rarely add humans in my paintings because I am not that confident and drawing humans kind of scares me. I dont get them right and that usually ruins the painting, but as the new me is keeping all the fears away, I still tried to add a few in there. Feels like I am in art school all over again which is great!! 😊

You know what I was most afraid of until now? Watercolors!🎨 Last I had tried this intimidating medium maybe 15-20 years ago during my art school days. But then I was more comfortable with friendly mediums like Acrylics and Gauche or may be a little bit with digital. They offered me more control and opportunity to course correct if anything goes wrong. Watercolors with their added layer of difficulty of all the technicalities always seemed unachievable. However, I think I am old enough now to let go of my fears and dive straight into learning watercolors all over again. Although, I did a rookie mistake of picking a very complex scene for practice and used watercolors in somewhat incorrect way (more like Gauche or poster colors), I like how it turned out. I am still learning how to add more depth, how to let go of the unwanted details, how to mix colors and even technical aspects like how to wet your paper and the speed this medium demands. I will be posting my journey here. I am not afraid anymore 🙂 Wish me luck and consistency 😊

I had clicked a picture of this vendor from my hometown in India, selling vegetables and farm produce on a regular rainy day sometime last year. The vibrant green color that popped against the gray and gloomy weather, was actually quite refreshing. I had decided then and there to paint that visual one day. Alas I did paint it last month while doing another practice session with watercolors. Its a bit more watercolor style I guess than the last one but still lacks depth, light and shadow play that we usually see in such paintings. Well, only good thing about this painting is the improved confidence I am carrying when I think of watercolors. I really wish I could avoid painting that photobombing auto rickshaw in the background. Such a waste of space! Well I can always revisit and do another try once I am a bit better with this medium. Let me know what do you think of this one and what could be better. Thank you.🌿

Sculpted this Ganesha idol for this year’s Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Managing entire operation of .ganesha along with a full time job was already quite a daunting task but sculpting an idol for my home in this beloved festival is something that I can’t ever give up. Fortunately I was able to spend some time to make this sculpture as my family expected it to be. I am satisfied and happy how this idol turned out. Ganapati Bappa Moraya! 🙏🏼🎉🥁

Look what I found! This was done quite a while back during my art school days. I guess in 2007! My days at were vivid, spontaneous and filled with quick artwork trials like this one here. No fear of failure, no care for judgements and absolutely no holding back, we were free souls. This is Rachana Sansad as I still remember.

- Wire Trees -
Exploring some new ideas for doing wire trees. I used real dried tree branches and large pebbles as a base. I am loving this natural feature added to these sculptures. However I am still skeptical about how long those branches will hold up without any treatment. Leaves are made of a galvanized iron wire. Let me know what you guys think 😃

Painted a mural this week for a nursery room. I was commissioned to design and paint a mural with a theme having the moon, stars and dreamy clouds; all in white color primarily against the gray wall paint. It was fun to brainstorm ideas, graphics and compositions for this one. House owners were wonderful and super helpful. They gave me required space and freedom, making this a very pleasant experience. I hope this mural brings a lot of joy to their little one and the family. ❤️

- LOOKING BACK -
A small home decor update I did this summer. A collage of 9 canvases showcasing our journey together so far. (Swipe left to see them all up close and read below what they are 😊)

Upper row shows our travels
1. Udaipur (India) - A place boasting a lot of historical royal palaces and its heroic past🛕
2. Armenia - A country famous for its heritage, beautiful people and Apricots; 🍑Who knew? 😀
3. Goa-Konkan - A coastal region on the western coast of India dubbed as California of India 🏝

The middle row shows the cities we both grew up in and lived and loved
4. Kalyan-India - Our home town❤️
5. Dubai - What else to say? 🤩
6. Toronto - Our new home town❤️

Bottom row is dedicated to Canada 🇨🇦 and its nature that we simply adore ❤️
7. Trees and mountains🏞 (Toronto & Vancouver mainly)
8. Pine cones🌲
9. Maple leaves 🍁

I tried to keep these minimal and stylized with two colors and a golden line work.

Ganesha is a god of new beginnings and with his blessings, I started ‘Rekhatan Ganesha idols’ this year here in Toronto. Curating beautiful eco friendly Ganesha idols from clay workshops in India, arranging ocean freight and shipping, customs clearance and business setup here in Canada, driving a U-Haul truck to pick up the shipment, opening those huge wooden pallets, moving all the heavy boxes, quality check and a photoshoot, setting up a booking website and finally doing promotions and sales, everything sailed quite smoothly and successfully. Ganesha idols safely went their own homes and celebrated this festival with a bit extra joy and beautiful decorations in Toronto (4th picture of a few celebrations). I couldn’t have done this without Kalika‘s support and motivation on every step 😊 and such a huge response from the community. Most importantly, the support we had from our families and relatives in this process was a key ingredient in this success. Thank you everyone! At the end, I couldn’t resist the urge of getting my hands in clay and yes I did create one tiny idol myself for our own home celebration too.(Very last picture here). I am extremely happy that this venture witnessed a huge success this first year and paved a path for more things and new hopes for the next year. Rekhatan will be back next year with new and exciting Ganesh Festival 2022!

Last month the entire western coast of Maharashtra was severely hit by the cyclone ‘Tauktae’. Despite the heavy rains and the stormy weather, our artists at ‘Rekhatan Ganesh Murti’ kept their morale high and made sure to deliver on our promises. Hats off to their courage, creativity and passion. Our very own Vighnharta bappa is with us and all the idols are on their way to Toronto already. Ganapati Bappa Moraya! 🙏🏼🎉😃
