Shelley Niro's "500 Year Itch" opens today at The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. On display until August 25, 2024.
Spanning four decades of photography, film, painting, installation, sculpture and mixed-media practice, this major exhibition highlights the themes Niro constantly returns to: Past Is Present, Matriarchy, Actors, and Family Relations.
Niro’s persistent vision is to represent Indigenous women and girls, advocating for self-representation and sovereignty. Her highly empathetic approach moves viewers to understand the issues at hand through her visually impactful and politically powerful manner. She uses parody, feminism, and spirituality to examine identity, and in turn, brings political power to the realm of the personal.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION!
Stephen Bulger Gallery is pleased to present Distant Early Warning, our first solo exhibition of work by Louie Palu.
Distant Early Warning provides a window into the evolving state of militarization of the Arctic, documenting the fragmented legacies of the Cold War along increased military presence of countries wishing to stake a claim in the region. The changes are exacerbated by climate change with the fact the area is warming more rapidly than any other part of the world. Working on this project since 2015, Palu has noticed a shift in the geopolitical tensions and changing life of Indigenous communities.
Join us for an opening reception Thursday, June 27, from 5 to 8 pm. An exhibition tour with Louie Palu will take place at 6:30pm.

Stephen Bulger Gallery is pleased to present Wynne Neilly and Kyle Lasky's "Have / Hold", on display in our Reading Room Gallery from Saturday, June 1 to Saturday, June 29.
Neilly and Lasky met at art school in 2009. They were two young, butch women, who found kinship in their masculine identities and mutual investment in documenting the q***r experience. They transitioned in tandem and supported each other through the complicated and non-linear process of reimagining their identities and relearning how to see themselves and be seen by others. The ease with which they express their closeness is built on a lifetime of socially acceptable, affectionate “female friendships.” They took this type of closeness and kept it with them.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION!
Stephen Bulger Gallery is pleased to present Nocturnal Botanical, our third solo exhibition of work by Sara Angelucci. The exhibition brings together two ongoing companion bodies of work, Nocturnal Botanical Ontario and Bella di Notte, for the first time.
Angelucci began creating botanical images in 2018 working with a scanner, in situ at night. The series began accidentally, as she retreated to the solace of her small city garden to process the deep grief of losing her sister. Working in solitude, she began to notice the smallest things—the obedient plants’ movable petals, the wild bellflower, and a single columbine growing beneath the peony bush. Reveling in this micro-world, it occurred to her that even grief offered gifts. Reading about the decline, and imminent extinction of species across the planet, her need to mourn expanded beyond her personal circle. During the pandemic Angelucci began to work in fields and forests near her cottage in the Pretty River Valley, Ontario, immersing herself in the natural world. She continues this endeavour expanding her botanical explorations to ponds, and river shores and exploring plant life in the changing seasons.
Join us for an opening reception Saturday, May 4, from 2 to 5 pm. An exhibition tour with Sara Angelucci will take place at 3pm.

REMINDER!
Body/Armour opens today at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre! An opening reception will take place today, from 1 to 4 pm. Join Claudia Fährenkemper and Stephen Bulger for an artist talk at 2 pm.
Fährenkemper’s photographs of Japanese samurai armour and electron microscope images of insect exoskeletons interrogate protective casings, both natural and man-made. Her work contrasts with Kaplan’s Bathers series, which meditates on bodies and rituality. Ruth Kaplan’s subjects appear more vulnerable when seen against the protective casings in Claudia Fährenkemper’s, while those casings remind the viewer of the extent to which humans will seek self-preservation.
