We are thrilled to welcome Lucy Mackinnon to our team! Lucy is an urban planner and researcher who recently joined 8 80 Cities as a Summer Project Assistant. Her research focuses on inclusive micro-mobility networks and the politics of pedestrian-focused street redesign in Toronto. Living in Copenhagen opened her eyes to the power of cities built for people rather than cars. It ignited her passion for the design of people-centred public spaces that invite meaningful social connections. She is entering her final year of a Master of Science in Planning at the University of Toronto. Previously, she received a Bachelor of Arts in International Development from McGill University. When she isn’t working, you can find Lucy biking around Toronto to discover something new in the city!

In 2019, the City of Helsinki recorded no pedestrian deaths for the first time since records began in 1960! How did they do it? By making streets generally less attractive to drivers including cutting speed limits, adding speed bumps, and most importantly, redesigning streets to put people first instead of cars. Come walk the city with us in Spring 2025, and learn how Helsinki was able to implement policies to create safer streets for all people.

Our Story

It all started in January 2007.

Frustrated by the lack of progress happening in cities both locally and globally, our founder, Guillermo Penalosa, set out to light a fire under decision-makers and community leaders reticent to change. In his words, he wanted to help cities “move from talking to doing.”

Having led urban transformation projects in Bogota in the late 1990s, he knew the tremendous power of investing in sustainable mobility, parks, and public spaces. After moving to the Greater Toronto area with his family, Guillermo incorporated the not-for-profit organization “Walk and Bike for Life” with the goal of promoting walking, bicycling, parks, and public spaces as a means to building healthier, happier, and more equitable communities. The organization quickly grew as municipalities and partners around the world began seeking out leadership and expertise in creating cities for all.

Fast forward 10 years, and we’ve:
