This National Indigenous Peoples Day, in an effort to foster greater inclusion of all Indigenous talent in the workplace, we asked Wanda, who is Bear Clan Tuscarora, Mohawk & Algonquin from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, and Darren Sutherland, who is Cree, a member of Fort Albany First Nation, and works as the Specialist, Indigenous Affairs at Mashkawazìwogamig Indigenous Resource Centre, University of Ottawa, a simple question: What does it mean to be an Indigenous-friendly employer?

Darren says it’s not about instantaneous results, but rather, meaningful engagement. And Wanda agrees, saying the first step to engaging Indigenous talent is building trust, defining what belonging means in your organization and celebrating distinctiveness rather than sameness. “I like to work with employers that want to build together, know they are learning, and want to grow in the space of Indigenous brilliance,” she said.

Creating opportunities and safe spaces to learn
- This month, members of our team will be learning about the q***r and trans experience, the ABCs of the 2SLGBTQIA+ acronym, the practice of sharing pronouns, and more through an exclusive workshop hosted by Bloom.
- We hosted an interactive session on intersectionality last fall for our team, highlighting what “minority” could look like, exploring how our team members self-identify, and starting the conversation on lived experience and how it shows up in our daily lives. Building inclusive HR practices
- Through stay interviews and quarterly check-ins, our leaders create a structured, safe way for two-way conversations in which team members can share concerns or suggestions to foster inclusivity.
- Clothing can be a fun way to express your identity. As a remote-first organization, we’ve moved beyond a dress code and encourage our team to wear what they’re most comfortable in and what feels most like them.
- When it comes to inclusion, language matters. That’s why we use gender-neutral language in our communications and encourage employees to include pronouns in their professional lives if they’re comfortable doing so.
Making an impact, together
- Last year, we partnered with Egale Canada to provide 20 students with a special backpack designed by Coast Salish, Musqueam artist Leila Stogan. Each backpack was filled with a range of items to foster health, wellbeing, and learning.
- This year, we’ve partnered with them once again to make an impact for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in Canada. Stay tuned for details in the coming weeks!
These are just a few of the steps we’ve taken on our journey, with more to come as we continue to celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion every day of the year!

So, today is “Blue Monday.” What’s blue about it? Well, it’s the depth of winter, it’s cold and the nights are dark. We might have debt from the holidays, and yes, we are still in COVID times. Your New Year’s resolutions might even be failing, too!

And here are 10 tips to brighten the hue of your blue every day:
1. Give a compliment, often.
2. Call someone in need of a chat. (Not a text, a real live voice shows you care.)
3. No matter how cold it is, HEAD OUTSIDE to look at the sky and breathe some fresh air.
4. Put your phone aside for a while. Try setting a timer to promote your digital health.
5. Take a “forest bath.” Even in winter, the sight and sounds of a forest can ease stress.
6. Ask someone to buy you flowers, so you can get a whiff of spring. Or give them to yourself with a card to yourself: “You are amazing!”
7. Listen to new music. Bonus if it makes you dance even a little.
8. Cook a new recipe with exotic spices so you can travel afar from your kitchen.
9. Dust off the old skates and hit a local rink.
10. When’s the last time you went sledding? If there’s snow near you, give it a whirl. Er… a slide.
