Scout, a 7-month-old female miniature Dachshund from Alaska, was born with incorrect blood vessel connections leading to her liver. Called an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), this condition results in attachments between many veins and arteries preventing appropriate blood flow to an organ or organs. This condition can be fatal as it often progresses to organ failure and the development of subsequent systemic issues. That was the case with Scout, as the AVM wasn’t allowing proper blood flow to her liver, altering liver growth and preventing filtering/cleaning of her blood. Only a handful of facilities in the country can treat this rare condition, so pet owners usually must go to great lengths to find a specialist with experience correcting AVMs. Dr. Bill Culp and the UC Davis team have been successfully treating the condition for 15 years. HOMER - ADOPTED
I am Homer. I am about 9 years old and am some sort of Pug x Bulldog mix. I start my story with once upon a time I had a family, Not sure what happened to them, or why they decided they didn’t want me anymore but I found myself at the shelter, I walked into my cage and looked all around, it didn’t smell like home. I decided if I sat at the front of my cage every minute of the day that my family would surely come and get me. After what seemed like many days and many nights my pals beside me said they weren’t coming, just like them we had been forgotten about. They said to not be too sad though because the shelter calls this place who brings fosters in to pick us up and then we get a new family. I wasn’t sure I wanted a new family though I kinda liked the one I had even if they forgot about me. The day came and my kennel door opened, I had a leash put on and away I went. I met so many new friends and although I do still think about my old family I am ready for a new one and some new adventures.
I am great with all dogs and am really a low key mellow kinda dude. I do not require a whole bunch of exercise or mental stimulation like some of these younger pups do. I have not met any kitties in my foster home but at the shelter I was fine with them. I am living with some kids in my foster home and they are cool, if there are kids in my new home please make sure they are respectful of me.
I do not need a crate but I am crate trained, sometimes it’s nice to just have a nice quiet space to take a nap ya know? I am house trained as long as you are paying attention to me and pick up on my cues to go out. I like to sit shot gun in the car but will sit in the back if I must. I like to go on walks around the neighborhood as well but I do not need lots of long walks or anything like that. I may have a couple lumps and bumps and I had some of my teeth taken out with my dental but I am still a good boy with lots of love to give.
If you think that you would be the perfect home for me please fill out the application on the website!
Please be sure to read all the details before applying.
