New study finds that well-designed density is positively correlated with well-being and happiness.
---
A recent study aimed to determine how density—and other aspects of the built environment, like housing type—impact individual happiness and well-being. The research found that a certain amount of density maximizes residents' well-being.

In particular, well-designed density—think pedestrian-friendly streets with easy access to transit and amenities like shops, restaurants, and parks—was positively correlated with well-being and happiness.

Other studies have similarly found that living in walkable neighborhoods, spending less time driving and commuting, and having access to third places like coffee shops and parks are associated with better well-being and social connectedness.

Rare, women-produced coffee alert!

Introducing: Acaia. Also known as Red Acaiá or Acaia Cerrado, this is a singular coffee variety found in Brazil.

Acaiá is a natural mutation of the Mundo Novo varietal (a Typica and Bourbon hybrid) and has always performed well in Brazil’s Cup of Excellence competitions. The plant grows well over 800 masl, providing a high yield and a general resilience to pests and disease.

Our notes on this coffee are creamy chocolate, caramelized sugar, and hazelnuts, with a clean and balanced finish.

The name Acaiá means "fruit with large beans" and comes from the Brazilian indigenous language Tupi-Guarani. Acaiá trees are also significant, with an average height of 4.20 meters and an average diameter of 1.80m.

Nature's beauty is beyond the coffee trees at the farms!

Being welcomed by the magnificent Floss Silk tree - or Paineira in Brazilian Portuguese, is a stunning reminder that the Alta Mogiana region is not just about coffee, it's about embracing the incredible wonders of nature.

These trees can reach up to 30 metres! It blossoms during the months of March and April, producing vibrant flowers that are creamy-whitish in the center and pink toward the tips of their five petals.

The waterfalls in the farms are breathtaking!

We love visiting the coffee fields in Brazil, but we never leave without going to the waterfalls in the Dbarbosa farms. Their farms are gifted with this natural wonder, and simply being near them brings us a sense of peace and connection with nature.

Having a significant body of water in the area also benefits the coffee trees and serves as a quick visual reminder of how much rain each season gets.

The Cerrado Mineiro Region is a world-recognized high-quality coffee-producing origin - the first “Designation of Origin” in Brazil, located in the northwest of Minas Gerais State.

Having well-defined seasons - a hot, wet summer and a pleasant dry winter - is a strong characteristic of the region.

The coffee plantations are cultivated in areas with altitudes varying between 800 and 1,300 meters, resulting in high-quality coffees with a unique identity.

Big numbers can be difficult to visualize sometimes. 800m to 1300 meters above sea level sounds a lot, but how high is it, really?

We compared it to iconic Canadian structures to show you how high grown coffee from the Cerrado Mineiro region really is.

So next time you're visiting one of these fantastic cities in Canada, you know that delicious Brazilian coffee you roast comes from a high-altitude region.

🌱 It's always mesmerizing to see coffee plants sprouting.

We checked the nursery during our last visit to the Family and seeing the future coffee trees is a refreshing reminder of how it takes years to produce a delicious cup that's consumed in minutes.

It all starts with a seedbed filled with treated sand to stimulate germination and initial growth. Next, seedlings are transferred to individual bags filled with an earthy, fertile soil mix. The young plants can stay in nurseries for up to a year!

The seedlings are watered frequently and shaded from bright sunlight until they are hearty enough to be permanently planted. Planting often takes place during the wet season so that the soil remains moist while the roots become firmly established.

And if you think that's a lot of work, you're right! Depending on the variety, the newly planted coffee trees will take approximately 3 to 4 years to bear fruit.

So next time you're roasting coffee, remember all the effort that was put into creating these fantastic beans even before the harvest and processing. No pressure 😅

🚜 We spend many hours on the road every time we visit our partner farms in Brazil, but the views are worth it tenfold!

Wade enjoyed some rest while Victor powered through one of many long drives. Drop an emoji in the comments if that's good copilot behavior 🤣

Throwback to our visit to the farms in the Cerrado Mineiro region in Brazil. It's always impressive to see fermentation processes up close!

🛢️ These are barrels for anaerobic fermentation, in which the coffee cherries are fermented in an oxygen-free environment.

☕ Anaerobic fermentation can take several days to weeks, and the exact duration depends on the desired flavour profile.

📝 This method tends to enhance acidity and produce unique flavours, including tropical fruits, berries, and floral notes.

The absence of oxygen creates conditions for different microbial activity, contributing to flavour development.
