Life is far from always being green grass and sunshine but this morning, I’ve got some exciting news to share! It’s about a book I’ve (literally) been writing for a year now: CLOSER TOGETHER: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other. Writing has always been a labour of love for me, and I had the opportunity to collaborate with amazing partners and experts to learn more about my favourite universal topic: why we think, feel, and act the way we do as human beings. Along the way, I’ll also be sharing some of my own deeply personal stories of what I’ve learned on my own mental health well-being journey. Coming out in Spring 2024. “I find that in the bustle of my everyday life - as a professional, as a wife, as a mum, reading has been a constant that has kept me grounded. It’s my form of self-care, something I do just for me. Finding a community of like-minded people, who love books just as much and could talk about them for ages, is one of the best discoveries I’ve made in the past couple of years since I created a bookstagram.
I pretty much read anything but mostly, I love reading books that highlight stories and cultures not widely explored, characters not commonplace. As such, I gravitate towards books written by BIPOC authors. I didn’t always have that luxury growing up, seeing myself reflected in these stories, and I’m glad that my daughter will never be so deprived. I’m grateful for the community I’ve found on bookstagram, the books I’ve read that have made me feel seen, and the stories I’ve imbibed that will never be forgotten.”

This , we're featuring Black Girls Gather (A Book Club), a youth-lead initiative that launched in September 2020. It serves as a safe space and mentoring group where young black women can meet and discuss literary works written by black authors. The activities of the club include reading discussions, movie screenings, creative writing workshops, poetry workshops, visits from special guests and art sessions all revolving around the books studied.
The purpose of the program is to empower young women by exposing them to black literature and engaging in discussions around themes such as coming of age, racism, discrimination, identity, feminism, love, family and friendship. Their hope is to build a network of support, mentorship and sisterhood for girls coming from the black community in Montreal and across Canada.

At last: Streisand memoir 'My Name is Barbra' coming Nov. 7 NEW YORK (AP) — Barbra Streisand's very long-awaited memoir, a project she has talked about for years, is coming out this fall. Viking, a Penguin Random House imprint, will release “My Name is Barbra” on Nov.
Every Sunday for the month of February, we'll be using our platform to spotlight organizations and creators who highlight Black voices and experiences.
This week, we're sharing this space with the Nia Centre for the Arts, a Toronto-based charity that supports Black artists and young creatives across disciplines. Through a combination of artistic programs for youth, professional development programs for artists and artistic exhibitions: the centre works to bring Black art to the forefront of culture in Toronto, year round.
Last year, the Centre worked with Penguin Random House to create a creative writing program called ‘Black Pen’. This program gave six emerging Black writers the opportunity to work with author and publisher Whitney French and have their work published in the chapbook ‘Griot: Six Writers Sojourn into the Dark’.
Since beginning their work 15 years ago, the organization has always envisioned a physical space dedicated to Black artistic production in Toronto. In 2023, the Centre will open Canada’s 1st professional Black arts centre in historic Little Jamaica. The building is 14, 000 sq, equipped with state of the art interiors, artist studios, performance space and more that will enable Black artists to create, boundlessly.
To support Nia Centre for the Arts, visit their website at niacentre.org.
