Amount Awarded: $5,000

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗜𝗡 𝗕𝗜𝗢

Miriam Adams, C.M., (co-founder of Dance Collection Danse and 15 Dance Lab) has a history of supporting work that breaks through conventional barriers. From the early days of 15 Dance Lab, Lawrence and Miriam Adams created a space that welcomed all and laid the foundation for what would become Toronto’s independent dance scene. The work was eclectic, diverse, risky, and investigative, inviting dynamic new voices to explore without traditional rules or restrictions.

In the spirit of 15 Dance Lab and Adams’s work, this bursary, supported by William J. S. Boyle, offers emerging professional dance artists an opportunity to train, research, and investigate, with a financial commitment to help ease the burden of advancing their professional careers.

The bursary is not intended for the creation of new work or choreographic processes, but rather for the training, research, and investigations that further the individual’s dance practice, such as mentorships and special training opportunities.

The Bursary of $5,000 covers expenses for one year, beginning upon the candidate’s receipt of funds.

Send your application material by WeTransfer to [email protected] with the subject line “Miriam Adams Exploration Bursary”. Application deadline is Friday, October 4, 2024 at 11:59pm (PDT).

The recipient of the Miriam Adams Exploration Bursary will be announced at the 2024 Dance Collection Danse Hall of Fame on Sunday, November 10, 2024.

From breaking on the streets to becoming part of Olympic history. ⁣

Philip Kim, aka B-Boy Phil Wizard, was crowned world champion at the 2022 WDSF Breaking World Championships. That triumph followed his runner-up finish at the 2021 World Championships. He went on to win another silver medal at the 2023 World Championships.

Just over a month later, Kim won gold at Santiago 2023, making him the first-ever b-boy to be a Pan Am Games champion. That victory qualified him for breaking’s Olympic debut at Paris 2024.

Kim made history in January 2019 when he became the first Canadian to win the Undisputed World Series with his victory at the Undisputed V Masters in Morocco. That year, he was also the first Canadian to be invited to the Red Bull RC One World Finals.

𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀!
The coming of AIDS was one of the defining moments of late-twentieth-century dance. Canadian dance was deeply impacted, first and foremost, through the loss of a generation of artists and future leaders and mentors, some already at the top of their field, others just beginning to realize their potential. AIDS changed us as a community and continues to impact the present day.

DCD is currently engaged in extensive research in preparation for an upcoming touring exhibition and publication called Stories of HIV/AIDS and Dance in Canada. To ensure that we gather as much information as possible for our archives, we are asking you to share stories of friends, loved ones, and collaborators who were lost to AIDS, and any artifacts that you believe would enrich our research including photos, printed materials, or other objects. As time passes, it is increasingly urgent that we record the truth of this cataclysmic time.

With thanks,
- Christopher House, Curator

• Rather than sending original objects, please send photos or scans along with any related information to 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼@𝗱𝗰𝗱.𝗰𝗮 These will be collected by DCD for possible use in the exhibition and publication. All submissions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and their use will be acknowledged.

• Stories of HIV/AIDS and Dance in Canada is produced in association with The ArQuives and The University of Waterloo. The project has been funded in part by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council.
