Rotary Club of Truro
The Rotary Club of Truro has a long history of providing service to the community both locally and internationally.
This week our Club bid farewell to exchange student Noel Ku**er; he has returned to his family in Switzerland after spending the last year in Truro. Noel attended many Rotary events, and was always a bright example of our future. We wish him all the best and hope our paths will cross again. He is pictured here with Past President Joanna McGowan and President Helen Becker.
The magical memories of getting ice cream with people you love! There's nothing quite like it, on days like this especially! Did you know Fundy Scoops is a social enterprise of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester? Every dollar raised from the dairy bar goes back into programs and services for young people in our community. We see the important work Big Brothers Big Sisters does and we're happy to help aid in providing more of these special moments for matches.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Truro for making a generous donation to our matches. Ice cream is free for our Littles, all season long!
When we think about getting ice cream, we think about making memories. So many of our matches love this outting together. They come and get ice cream, and enjoy the space behind our building. It's a real summertime experience! ☀️🍦🥰

We had a ton of fun walking in the Pride Parade yesterday! 💕 What a great day for it. 🏳️🌈
Some of our members attended the Pride flag raising at Truro Town Hall earlier today. We are happy to be a sponsor of this year's Pride Week activities.
Over this past weekend, the community of Portaupique and all those involved in this incredible project celebrated the grand opening of the Portaupique Community Centre.
An emotional, celebratory, reflective, and truly special weekend that we can't quite find the words to describe. We are immeasurably proud of the Rotarians involved in this project and we are so excited for all that's to come for this space!
For more pictures and videos captured from the Grand Opening head over to Portaupique Community Centre's page ❤️
Thank you to all those who joined us earlier this week for our 98th Annual Charter Night. It was such a special evening of celebration, reflection and emotion.
It's a great day to be a Rotarian!
The Rotary Club of Truro along with the Rotary Club of Truro Foundation made a donation of $30,000 to STEPs on Arthur Foundation to go towards a purchase of a new accessible van.
Members also attended Steps on Arthur’s Café for a delicious lunch and took a tour of the facility prior to our cheque presentation. 😊
A great way to round off Rotary Week...and a great day to be a Rotarian!❤️
Rotarians stopped by the Foodbank today to lend a helping hand. ❤️
Today marks the first day of Rotary Week! 🥳👏
We started off the week with some special guests at our lunch meeting. Matt Silva, a student at NSCC, saw a Rotary sign in Matt Redmond's office...long story short his Father in Law Herbert Gaban, who is a 30 year member of Rotary Club de Cajamar, Osasco, Brazil was visiting his Son in Law here in Truro and they decided to join us for a meeting. We love how Rotary connects us all around the world.
After our lunch meeting Rotarians attended a flag raising at the town of Truro. A great start to our week!

“Our Portaupique”
Written April 2, 2022 by Joy Snihur Wyatt Laking
In memory of those who were killed on April 18 & 19, 2020
And for those of us still traumatized.
“May we all learn to see the beauty again.”
Every day,
Twice a day,
The moon pulls the salt water
From the Minas Basin,
Up the Portaupique River
Until it spills over the salt marsh.
To the rhythm of the tides and seasons,
Eagles, geese, gulls
Soar overhead
Looking for rabbits, foxes, fish.
Moose, bear, and wild cat
Hunt, forage,
Raise families, die.
Deer browse new growth.
Foxes make dens in hillsides.
Woodpeckers hammer holes
In dead wood.
Beavers cut trees
To build dams and lodges.
For years,
The Mi’kmaq people
Paddled these shores
Camping and exploring
The Portaupique River inlet,
And up Into the valley
At the base of the
Still-shrinking Cobequid Hills.
Living a nomadic life,
They foraged all sorts of wild foods,
Jerusalem Artichokes,
Marsh Greens,
Fish and game.
Early in the 17th Century
The first Acadian family,
The Bourques
Arrived in Portaupique
From France.
They built rough houses,
And dikes and aboiteaus
To farm the salt marsh.
Their families were large.
Other communities
Were settled
up and down
The shore.
In the mid 18th century
The British claimed this land.
They expelled the Acadians,
Letting the earthen dikes and
Aboiteaus erode.
They farmed the post-glacial stoney land
Above the high water mark.
They harvested the woodland,
Fished the bay,
And cut salt hay from the marsh,
Like the tides,
Both people and nature,
Ebb and flow.
The tiny fragrant spring beauty
Is a foil to horrendous acts and death.
Aging, poverty, religion and politics
Bring neighbours together
Or drive them apart.
Nature is not kind
But neither is it punitive.
Only people have the choice
To live in harmony,
Or not.
Every day,
Twice a day,
The moon pulls the salt water
From the Minas Basin
Up the Portaupique River
Until it spills over the salt marsh.

This week's speaker at our Rotary meeting was Marshall Feit, Executive Director at the Marigold Cultural Centre.
Thanks for stopping by Marshall!
Fellow Rotarian Ibraham from Cameroon sent Truro Rotarian Lydia a picture of Polio Immunizations being administered in Cameroon, Africa by Rotarians. There has been a Polio outbreak following Covid19 in Cameroon; immunization is critical. To reach all children is impossible. Some schools are not operating due to civil unrest and many children do not go to school, hence it's hard to organize immunization.
Lydia says: "I remember the fear my parents instilled in us before 1955 when the vaccine for polio was first available. Polio spreads from person-to-person through contact with the f***l material - p**p (often tiny, invisible amounts) - of an infected person. It can also spread through the sneeze or cough droplets from an infected person."
The following link is an extensive article describing how Cameroon was polio free but is experiencing an outbreak of cases.
Polio outbreaks in Cameroon following the COVID-19 pandemic Polio is an infectious and disabling life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus. This disease is prevented through vaccination. Though this viral infection has been eliminated in most parts of the world, a few countries are still endemic to wild ...
We were thrilled to attend the Rotary Club of New Glasgow's 100th anniversary celebration last weekend. Members who enjoyed the evening included Alana Hirtle, President Sharon Corcoran and her partner Orland, Judy Nicholson, and Marilyn Brown (RC Halifax Northwest). Missing from photo are Ralph and Donna Hopkins.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas spent with loved ones. 🎄🌟🎁
Happy Holidays from all of here at the Rotary Club of Truro!
Thank you so much to the good folks at EHS Nova Scotia who spent the day at Walmart Truro, and to all those who helped to fill an ambulance with toys for the Christmas Index program. Even in these challenging financial times, people were incredibly generous! Here is Rotary member Alana Hirtle with some of the EHS staff in front of the full ambulance.
We had so much fun at the parade! What a great turn out from our community. Thanks to our Rotarians who worked hard putting everything together.
