From Nest to Flight: The Journey of Growth and Independence

Over the past few weeks, I've had the joy of watching baby birds hatch in a nest right by my front door. I've seen them grow from an empty nest to four lively birds, and eventually, to an empty nest again as they took flight. This journey reminds me of the consulting work I do with my insurance brokerage clients.

My insurance clients often come to me with an 'egg'—their vision for growth, expansion, and sustainability. The 'chicks' hatch when we identify the strategies and tools needed to bring that vision to life. Together, we work closely to ensure these plans take flight, with the right people and processes in place.

Seeing those baby birds leave the safety of my front door was truly rewarding. Similarly, it brings me immense satisfaction to watch my clients soar independently, empowered by the work we've done together.

Think your boss is acting a bit unusual? You’re probably right. 😅

I remember many times my staff thought I was! But here's the thing - when a woman business owner, leader, or executive seems off-kilter, it might be because of stress.

Women often take on more psychological responsibility for others' wellbeing, worrying about you, your family, their clients, business finances, meeting deadlines, market changes, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. 💼💭

Running a business and leading a team takes a big toll on mental health. As a team member, your empathy and understanding can make a world of difference. 🤝💙

As Simon Sinek says in his book Leaders Eat Last, "when our boss comes down hard on us and we don't know the reason, it is equally our responsibility to express concern for their well being."

This Mental Health Awareness Month, let's recognize the pressures faced by women in leadership and support each other with empathy and understanding.

Albert Einstein beautifully remarked, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

A little over a year ago, we reached a pivotal moment—taking occupancy of our lake house. This wasn't just a construction; it was a creation of heart, home, and business, necessitating a leap of faith, patience, and indeed, a touch of the miraculous.

✅ Collaborating on the design plan with our architect.
✅ Choosing the perfect team of contractors and consultants.
✅ Addressing and solving significant electrical issues.
✅ Keeping our cool when financial plans needed adjusting.

These lessons echo through my work in business, where similar virtues spell success:

Grief is so hard, especially when death comes completely unexpectedly.

When my family lost my father and my father in law, my family had time to prepare. We did so as best we could, spending quality time, reminiscing, and supporting. There was a certain degree of acceptance when the time came.

Two weeks ago I lost my youngest sibling at the age of 51. I had never even considered losing a sibling so suddenly. There was absolutely no way to be ready in any way, shape, or form.

Yes, professionally I help businesses that are in a difficult situation. And sure I've had personal challenges over the years. We all have.

But this has been terrible, at times horrific. Especially for my brothers wife and son.

I was really angry for a few days, and then I had to accept there was no way I could change it. It was time to help with the end of life celebration planning.

Yesterday, we had a beautiful service - dozens of people paying tribute to my brother David. It brought me so much gratitude and peace. A cherished moment in time.

I read this poem at his celebration yesterday. Today I'm sharing it today for anyone else who has lost a loved one, and may find comfort in its message.

Remember Me:
To the living, I am gone.
To the sorrowful, I will never return.
To the angry, I was cheated,
But to the happy, I am at peace,
And to the faithful, I have never left.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore, gazing at a beautiful sea - remember me.

A peaceful and happy Christmas from my home to yours.

As I finish a few tasks before the holidays, thought I would share a family tradition that's been part of our holidays since 1988. 🎅

My husband and I started a tradition of exchanging ornaments and adding them to our tree.

Some years, there were just a couple; others, a festive flurry. When our daughter joined in, we quickly added many more to our collection.

Now, with hundreds of ornaments, our tree decorating has become a cherished family tradition. We spend several hours, filled with laughter, memories, and gratitude that we're together. We toast those who are no longer with us, and celebrate the good things that have happened this year.

Currently, our tree stands bare, eagerly awaiting our daughter's arrival from the east coast tomorrow night; just in time for Christmas.

Wishing all a Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with health, joy, and success in 2024!

I spent yesterday creating my personal and professional plan for 2024, reflecting on the journey so far and envisioning the exciting path ahead. In the spirit of this reflection, I'm thrilled to share some updates from my journey since 2020.

Over the years, I've worn various hats—from serving as a trusted business consultant for insurance brokerages to guiding entrepreneurial couples on their path to success. Whether sharing insights as a podcast guest or organizing impactful events for business owners, each experience has added fulfillment to my professional journey.

Reflecting on a recent business event in Maine, where I had the opportunity to lead a discussion on the unique dynamics of working with your spouse—balancing business growth and relationship enhancement.

When my hubby suggested to our design team that a storm room at our Lakehouse I was wondering what on earth he was thinking this time. Oh, the ideas he comes up with still surprise me 35 years into our relationship. ❤️

Then I remembered that one of my hubbys top strengths is ideation.

According to the Discover Your Strengths book, people with Ideation in their top strengths “revel in taking the world we all know and turning it around so we can view it from a strange but strangely enlightening angle.”

And, “people who have Ideation will be particularly effective as designers.” So, he was designing a space that would keep us safe if a tornado comes through the lake.

This is where things got interesting.

One of my top 5 strengths is maximizing. Maximizers “transform something strong into something superb”, and “polish the pearl until it shines”. 💎

The gem of my husbands idea of a storm shelter was polished by setting it up as a home gym, so we can maximize the use of the space on a daily basis, while having a safe place if a storm comes through.

And, the wine bar is just around the corner, so if we need to turn the "workout room" into a "fun out" space while we wait out any storms, we're all set. 🍷

Friends, this is where co-creating with the people on your Dream Team can result in something much better than you would have on your own.

I've relied on the StrengthsFinder assessment in both my professional and personal life for years, a valuable tool for optimizing partnerships. 📈🤝

I’ve been studying longevity the last few months as I continue to upgrade my body. I keep saying I want healthy life as long as possible after losing some friends far too young.

These days my workouts at the lake often take outside on my patio with my iPad and phone. I listen to podcasts on my phone while using the videos to cue my movement (personal productivity hack!)

As I got ready for an early morning drive to the airport today I grabbed these socks.

My daughter gave them to me last year for my birthday because she knows how much I love dolphins.

Over the last few months I've chatted with a number of women founders and CEO's who have a goal of having their spouses join their business.

My spouse joined my family business in 1997. I learned so much along the way - there was a lot I didn't know and some of the lessons were pretty painful.

Overall, though, the advantages were significant - for example, having that person in your corner 24/7 come heck or high water can make all the difference when it's time to make a big decision.
