Rodent Abatement Reports are now required before demolition in Coquitlam, Delta, New Westminster and North Vancouver. Pestcheck Pest Control is the leading provider of abatements. We’ll keep your project on track!

Why Is The Report Necessary?

When the building is demolished, the rat colony is immediately displaced. Construction machinery also sends waves of vibration through the ground. This disturbs any rats living below the surface. Thus causing them to seek shelter in adjacent structures, like homes and businesses.

Rats are the ultimate squatters. Where most of us see a derelict property, rats see prime real estate. This is where they can get shelter, build nests and reproduce. These buildings are also a convenient source of water due to leaks.

When a building has been a neighbourhood eyesore for years, the decision to demolish it may seem like a smart one. You will no longer have to worry about adventurous kids being hurt. However, it may not occur to you that tearing the building down can introduce a whole new problem. It is the perfect home for a rodent population.

What We Do?
First we come out to inspect the property. If there is an infestation, a rodent removal service is put in place. Baits and traps will be used. Once the infestation has been eliminated, we will issue you the rodent abatement report. The service takes between 7 – 10 days to complete. Then, you submit the report with your demolition permit application.

Please note: the report is needed whether or not your property has an infestation.

If you need a rodent abatement report to receive a demolition permit, you have come to the right place. Our rodent abatement program is fast, efficient and effective so you can keep your construction project on track.

Call Pestcheck Pest Control today. We are specialists in rodent and avian abatement.

Raccoon Baby Season! When do Raccoons have Babies?

In answer to the question; When do raccoons have babies? Spring time is raccoon baby season. Raccoons mate in late winter and baby raccoons (kits) are typically born around spring between April and May. However, if the mother’s first baby raccoons did not survive, she may give birth to another one in June.

TELL TALE SIGNS

Raccoons have gained entry to your home:

* Visible entry points on the exterior of the building – often you will see bent siding, damaged soffits/roof vent or other obvious signs of animal entry.
* Thumping and rustling – because raccoons are large animals we hear them moving around and preparing their nest.
Baby’s cries/chirps – much like their human counterpart, baby raccoons are very vocal in during the early days. You will hear them crying regularly throughout the day (and unfortunately nights). See video below this section to hear an example of what baby raccoons sound like.
See the mother hanging around the property. She will not wander too far while her kits are young and helpless.
* Another reason you want to avoid having these animals give birth on your property is that the following year, the female babies will return to the same location to have their litter. And each subsequent year that follows the young females will attempt to return. Don’t let the cycle get started.

How Long Do They Stay?
It takes roughly three months for baby raccoons to be able to move around on their own. Before the three months are up, you’re unlikely to see any baby raccoons in your home; they’ll be nestled away in the insulation while their mother goes out to forage. A litter will contain between 1 and 8 kits, with the typical size being 3-5 babies. The mother has to wait till they are all mobile.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day and you might be asking yourself, “What does that have to do with bugs?”. Well, I’m going to tell you. Something that we all associate with St. Pat’s is the colour green.

We all think of following the rainbow to the lucky pot of gold, finding four leaf clovers, drinking green beer or bumping into a leprechaun. But what does today’s celebrations have to do with bugs?

Well, some pests are naturally ready for St. Patrick’s Day all year round. Many such as the Praying Mantis, the Grasshopper and some types of beetles are green.

While some pests resemble the rainbow. That beautiful arch that some believe leads to a lucky pot of gold at its end. These insects carry that beauty with them.

And of course, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. These insects are as golden as the coins the leprechauns carry.

May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow and may trouble avoid you wherever you go – Irish Blessing

Chestnuts are roasting on an open fire. Jack Frost is nipping at our nose. Pretty soon, you may even hear yuletide carols being sung by choirs in your neighborhood. It is that time of year again, which means it’s time to start thinking about holiday baking, your Christmas recipe and holiday gatherings. As you’re preparing to cook tasty holiday treats, and as you’re preparing your home for gatherings with friends and family, take a moment to consider pest control. It could keep the most wonderful time of the year from turning into the most frustrating time of the year. Here is our recipe for the perfect Christmas.

A SPRINKLE OF COCKROACH CONTROL

Nothing can ruin holiday foods like cockroaches. Not only are cockroaches known to spread human pathogens, bacteria and parasitic worms, they can make your food taste terrible without even getting into them. Cockroaches communicate with pheromones. These pheromones smell bad. If you detect a smell in your kitchen that seems a little off, you could have cockroaches in your home. And that smell can leach into your foods and make them taste bad.

Should I cut down a real Christmas tree or buy a fake one? It is a question on everyone’s mind at Christmas time. But if you choose a fresh one, will you also invite into your home Christmas tree insects such as spiders and mites? Freshly-cut evergreen trees are beautiful and make your home smell amazing, getting you in the Christmas spirit. But when you bring home a living tree you are also inviting thousands of little insects that are hibernating inside the tree.

To prepare for these insects, pre-treat your tree before bringing it into your home with Diatomaceous Earth. This insecticidal powder uses no synthetic chemicals and leaves no scent or odor. Simply dust your tree while it’s still outside and shake off excess before bringing it inside.

Remember, when sleeping insects enter your festive, warm home, they will wake up thinking it’s spring! Check out our infographic below for the most common Christmas tree insects. Make sure they don’t crash your holiday party by taking preventative steps to de-bug your tree.

It’s that time of year: Sleigh bells are jingling and ring-ting-ting-a-ling. Chestnuts are roasting on open fires and bright-nosed reindeer are gearing up to make their holiday rounds. But before you rock around your Christmas tree this holiday season, you ought to consider the pests that might be lurking inside of and around it.

So what can you do to protect your Christmas tree and keep pests out of your home? Let’s start with…

BABY-PROOFING YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE
Pests come in all shapes and sizes and there are numerous ways to keep bugs away. As much as we love our little tykes, children and Christmas trees do not go hand in hand. Until little kids understand the etiquette of not messing with Christmas trees, it’s best to take precautions. Number one is to make sure your Christmas tree is safe. The main thing to protect your children from accidentally pulling the tree over onto themselves.

If you’re willing to compromise on tree height, you can put the tree on a tall table, making it out of reach. You might also consider weighing the base down. The last alternative is to put a safety gate around the tree for as long as it’s up. Aside from that, put all of the breakable ornaments you care about above child grabbing range. Otherwise, you might have a sentimental disaster on your hands!

PET-PROOFING YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE
With dogs, it’s pretty simple. As long as they aren’t chewing the tree, all you have to do is put breakable ornaments above tail-wagging height. Dogs who have trouble with assaulting the tree can be kept at bay with the safety gate method above.

Learning how to get rid of mice begins with one simple choice: do you want to do things the easy way or the hard way? Helping get rid of mice can be as simple as making one phone call to a Pestcheck Pest Control or else it can seem like you’re chasing invisible mice in walls. Although, the title of this blog is ‘How to Get Rid of Mice’, it really should be called ‘How Pest Control Technicians Get Rid of Mice’. Searching on the internet for various tips to catch these rodents is a good place to start. However, there are many steps involved in ridding your pest problem. Simply laying out traps does not work. Our qualified technicians have an arsenal of tools to choose from in the pest control toolbox.

Here are the three steps Pestcheck Pest Control takes:

1. INSPECTION
Each service begins with a phone/email consultation and onsite inspection. During the inspection, your technician will identify the access points mice are using to get into your home. He is looking for signs of mice, such as droppings and damage. This will then lead to understanding the levels of mice activity.

2. ACTION PLAN
Now that we have all the information on the infestation, we create a service plan. The technician may use a number of methods such as snap traps, glue boards, exterior bait boxes, closing voids, adding door sweeps and so on.

3. RODENT CONTROL
Finally, he sets up your rodent control service, tailored to your home, so you can get life back to normal.

Once we have the mice out of your house, you want to keep them out for good. The best advice we can give you is to follow these basic rodent prevention recommendations:

* cleanliness
* proper food storage
* moisture elimination
* close any holes in your home
