Learning how to get rid of mice begins with one simple choice: do you want to do things the easy way or the hard way? Helping get rid of mice can be as simple as making one phone call to a Pestcheck Pest Control or else it can seem like you’re chasing invisible mice in walls. Although, the title of this blog is ‘How to Get Rid of Mice’, it really should be called ‘How Pest Control Technicians Get Rid of Mice’. Searching on the internet for various tips to catch these rodents is a good place to start. However, there are many steps involved in ridding your pest problem. Simply laying out traps does not work. Our qualified technicians have an arsenal of tools to choose from in the pest control toolbox. Here are the three steps Pestcheck Pest Control takes: 1. INSPECTION Each service begins with a phone/email consultation and onsite inspection. During the inspection, your technician will identify the access points mice are using to get into your home. He is looking for signs of mice, such as droppings and damage. This will then lead to understanding the levels of mice activity. 2. ACTION PLAN Now that we have all the information on the infestation, we create a service plan. The technician may use a number of methods such as snap traps, glue boards, exterior bait boxes, closing voids, adding door sweeps and so on. 3. RODENT CONTROL Finally, he sets up your rodent control service, tailored to your home, so you can get life back to normal. Once we have the mice out of your house, you want to keep them out for good. The best advice we can give you is to follow these basic rodent prevention recommendations: * cleanliness * proper food storage * moisture elimination * close any holes in your home Our professionally trained staff has years of experience in the pest management world. They are specially equipped to help you navigate your pest control issues. Give us a call.

Is this you… you’re alone in your apartment, relaxing on your sofa, watching TV. Out of the corner of your eye, you see something that makes you realize you’re not actually alone. A mouse sprints across your kitchen floor, over countertops and disappears before you even realize what happened. Yes, you scream to yourself, I just saw a mouse in my apartment! Finding a little intruder can be unsettling. Mice are often hard to spot without physical signs left behind as evidence. And, like other pests, they can sneak inside your home without warning. Mice may not even be living in your home. But rather, passing through to one of your neighbours’ units who might not prioritize cleaning the same way you do. Seeing or hearing mice can lead to something much bigger like an infestation. Unfortunately, seeing a mouse in your apartment isn’t uncommon, especially in urban environments. So what should you do first? TELL YOUR PROPERTY MANAGER OR LANDLORD Your property manager or landlord doesn’t want mice in the apartment just as much as you don’t. He or she may call pest control, such as Pestcheck, to come out and take care of the problem for you. If the infestation resulted due to a lack of building maintenance, the landlord might call an exterminator to come in. In other cases, the landlord may ask you to hire an exterminator and then refund the extermination costs or deduct it from your rent. If the infestation came about due to your lack of care for the property, you might be left carrying the bill. While it’s not fun to deal with mice in your home, you can take the appropriate steps to resolve the situation and prevent it from happening in the future. Just remember to tell your property manager immediately when the tell-tale signs emerge, as this will help stop them in their tracks. And if the mice problem becomes a pressing issue and you’re making numerous calls to the leasing office, you could move out or see what your tenant rights are.

DO YOU NEED ATTIC RODENT CLEAN UP? Before doing any work on your attic, you must figure out if any pests have already called the space ‘home’. Rodents are a common culprit in attics, but knowing whether you need rodent removal and decontamination services is not always straightforward. While a professional inspection is certainly a helpful tool, there are also common signs you can look for to see whether you need attic rodent clean up. WHY IS RODENT CLEAN-UP NECESSARY? Even if you already know you have a rodent problem in your attic, you may be curious why clean up and restoration services are necessary. After all, there’s nothing up there besides dust and insulation. So why is it important to invest in an attic rodent clean up? Rodents pose serious health risks to people and animals. They can carry several diseases and parasites which can spread not only through direct contact but also through their droppings and urine. If there is currently a rodent infestation in your attic, it’s important to remember that the pests could easily continue spreading to other areas of your home by using the vents as a crawl space. Extermination and clean up will be much more difficult and expensive if you choose to wait until the problem spreads. Moreover, without a crawl space or attic cleaning service, you may not even know the extent of the infestation’s damage. LOOKING FOR SIGNS OF RODENTS If you are going to look for rodents in your attic, it is important to prepare. Wear full-body protection including eye, nose, and mouth protection. Use a good flashlight when looking for signs of these critters in your attic. Don’t just look on the floor – check walls, rafters, insulation, ducts, and ceilings for signs of rodent activity. These contaminants find their way into your living space, posing a serious health risk to you and your family. It is for this reason that a crawl space clean up is needed. It is best to leave a crawl space clean up service in the hand of specialists. Crawl space cleaning = hard work. If you are willing to go the DIY route, you need to; pick up all the garbage and get rid of nonessential wood or paper scraps, including old form wood, to name a few. Autumn in Vancouver is beautiful. Look outside your window and you’re bound to see trees full of color and lawns still vibrant and green. Behind the scenes, though, many pests are working overtime in preparation for the winter. There’s a reason why you may be seeing an influx of beetles, wasps, and spiders around your home. Below we share four of the most common pests that are active in the fall. Mice & Rats Mice and rats are among the most common fall pests in Vancouver because they search for the same warmth and food to survive the winter that humans do. Unfortunately, a functional furnace and well-stocked pantry often make homes and businesses a vacation home for them. Rodents will not want to leave once they have established a nest. A problem further compounded by their ability to quickly reproduce and turn a small group of mice or rats into a much larger problem. Raccoons Raccoon populations inside towns and cities are at their peak during fall and competition for shelter intensifies. This competition ultimately drives raccoons out of the cold and into cosy attics where they are capable of causing considerable damage. It is important to evict and control raccoons before they have the chance to establish themselves inside the home. The longer raccoons are allowed to live inside an attic the more damage they can inflict and the more difficult it can be to keep them out. Squirrels Short days and cold temperatures in autumn signal to squirrels that seeds, acorns and walnuts will soon be in short supply. As with raccoons, squirrel competition for a limited number of winter den sites intensifies during fall. This is the time of year when every squirrel will be intent on securing multiple den sites to help them survive winter. Squirrels nest inside roofs and attics to avoid predators and shelter themselves from the elements. Once inside, their powerful teeth can cause damage to your home.
MOUSE POOP VS RAT POOP: HOW TO IDENTIFY AND CLEAN UP DROPPINGS HOW TO CLEAN UP RAT & MOUSE POOP SAFELY Open the doors and windows – Ventilate the room for at least 30 minutes before you begin cleaning. Wear protective gear – Use rubber gloves, so you don’t touch the waste directly; a face mask, so you don’t inhale the dust (as we said, diseases can be transmitted by inhaling polluted dust); even consider wearing protective goggles, so contaminated dust doesn’t get into your eyes. Spray with a 10% chlorine bleach solution – Mix 360 millilitres of chlorine bleach with 5 litres of hot water and spray the droppings with the solution. Don’t sweep or vacuum, as this will release pathogens into the air and/or trap the pathogens on your broom or in your vacuum cleaner. Pick up the droppings with a paper towel – Then, place them in a plastic bag and seal it. Also, put the paper towel in a plastic bag and seal it. Dispose of the plastic bags outside of your home. Wipe all floors and surfaces with disinfectant – Use the same solution of 10% chlorine bleach. Use a paper towel to dry. Wash your hands – Use hot water and a disinfectant to clean your hands. Don’t forget to scrub under your nails and around your wrists. Look carefully for evidence of rat or mice poop, urine and nesting materials and be sure to follow the steps to dispose of it and disinfect the area properly. Most importantly, NEVER sweep or vacuum it up because of the risk of transmitting disease in the process. If you’re finding droppings and you need help with identification, let the pest specialists here at Pestcheck Pest Control assist you. We’ll help you track down those rodents and keep them out of your home permanently. #mousepoop #micepoop #ratpoop #micedroppings #ratdroppings #rodentdeoppings #atticcleaning #crawlspacecleaning #sanitize #disinfect #disinfectant #mice #rats #rodents #rodentcleanup #kitchen #pestcontrolblog #westvancouverblogger #bloggergirl #feedspot #pe

In order to prevent ants from entering your home this summer, you need to make sure that all foods are properly stored and sealed. You need to clean up any leftovers and crumbs after meals as well as taking out garbage frequently. STOP! How Not to Get Rid of a Wasp Nest Wasps are common summertime pests. Their stings are not only painful but can cause allergies in some people and so it is necessary to get rid of wasps. One way to protect yourself and your family from wasps is to keep your home free from hives and nests. Regularly, walk around the exterior of your home and look for nests on the underside of porches, decks, overhangs, eaves, shrubs, trees, sheds, and other structures. If you find a nest, you should be able to identify it to determine the risk it may pose to your family. The following list is going to make you stop in your tracks and sit up and listen. DON’T BURN A WASP NEST Using fire to remove a wasp nest is not only ineffective but also dangerous. The nests are made of a papery substance which is extremely flammable. The fire will not kill the wasps but make them violent, resulting in them attacking you and others. The fire can also damage your property. DON’T STAND ON A LADDER TO REACH THE WASP NEST If the nest is somewhere high up, don’t use a ladder to reach. Get professional help. DON’T TRY TO KNOCK DOWN A LARGE NEST You may succeed, but you will make the wasps violent, and they will start attacking you. DON’T POUR FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS INTO A GROUND NEST It’s ineffective, and it also will pollute the groundwater. DON’T FLOOD THE NEST WITH WATER Water can damage your property, especially if the nest is your attic. And in response to the water attack, the wasps can get defensive and may sting you. DON’T DESTROY A WASP NEST WITH A BAT Trying to destroy the wasp nest with a bat or racket will put you at risk of getting stung, not just once, but multiple times. This can lead to anaphylactic shock if you are allergic to wasp stings. Pestcheck Pest Control technicians are trained and qualified in wasp nest removal techniques. At Pestcheck Pest Control, our team uses safety equipment and treatments to get rid of wasp nest and prevent its return. To schedule a

The BC Ministry of Environment recently announced an eighteen month ban on the use of Second Generation Anticoagulated Rodenticides (SGARs). But what exactly does this ban mean to homeowners and business owners with rodent problems? First off, let’s understand what SGARs are exactly. SGARs are the most widely used rodenticides in the pest technician’s toolbox. They have a quick knock down effect on rodents. The rodent only has to eat the bait once for the poison to work. The downside is the rodent’s natural predators like hawks and owls can die or suffer long-term effects from eating poisoned rodents. The highlighted active ingredients in the grid below are what the BC government have banned. The BC pest control industry can still use First Generation and Non-Anticoagulant rodenticide. However, when using these types of rodenticide, the rodent must continue to feed on it multiple times over several days. It can be difficult to get the rodent to do this, especially during the summer months when there is an abundance of food for them outside. Pavement ants are an ant species that invades homes, following a trail of edible crumbs. These ants especially crave protein and also glucose (sugar), which is why they are sometimes called sugar ants. Pavement ants mostly prey at night, literally catching us napping! Pavement ants live in large colonies in subterranean nests. At times, a single colony can accommodate over 10,000 ants. In Metro Vancouver, they dwell under the pavements, sidewalks, patios and garden mounds. They enter homes by making tiny openings in porous bricks or through floor cracks. You can control pavement ants in three ways. SEAL OPENINGS AND CRACK One of the easiest ways to prevent an ant infestation is to seal the cracks and openings from inside your home. This will block the entry points of pavement ants. However, sealing all the openings can be difficult and time-consuming. Chances are, you would miss some of them under the bed or behind a mirror frame. Some may be inaccessible even if you spot them. Hence, this is not a reliable way to control pavement ants. LOCATE THE NEST AND DESTROY IT Pavement ants are very disciplined and methodical in their work. Usually, they travel in single file. It is easy to track their return journey and when you have reached a dead-end, you can be sure that the nest is nearby! Usually it is under a rock, soil mound or in the sidewalk. Typically, look for any moist areas that create a favourable eco-system for the ants to live in. Once you have located the nest, call Pestcheck Pest Control to eliminate the ant nest with commercial grade insecticide. BENEFITS OF A PROFESSIONAL PEST CONTROL SERVICE Whichever way you try to control pavement ants, chances are that you may not succeed fully nor permanently. The domestic grade insecticide you choose to use may be harmful to humans and you may or may not be trained in handling dangerous chemicals. In order to get the best results in controlling pavement ants, it is advisable to take the help of a professional

ATTIC CLEAN UP: SHOULD YOU HIRE A PROFESSIONAL Evicting rats, squirrels or raccoons from the attic is a big process and it comes with some side effects. The process doesn’t end after eviction: there is still a major clean up needed to decontaminate your home. If you recently had to remove any kind of animal in your attic, you need to invest in an attic clean up. Here’s why. Structure and Property Damage Rodents gnaw, which isn’t only annoying, but quite literally leaves a dent in your home’s structure. For them, all materials like drywall, soft concrete and wooden beams is fair game. But it doesn’t end with bite marks. Acidic urine can burn through the wood. Raccoons can destroy materials such as roof vents, soffits, and loose shingles, as they tear their way inside. This type of damage ruins your home’s structural integrity and ultimately leaving you to deal with the aftermath. Rats, squirrels and raccoons use the insulation in your attic to build their nests and keep themselves warm. Removing it from your walls compromises your home’s ability to retain heat. This means you’re not only dealing with replacement, but higher than normal electric bills. Not only is replacing insulation annoying, the insulation found in your attic is now ripped, soiled and contaminated by the wildlife who used it. What’s Involved It’s an intense process that covers all the bases. All necessary measures are taken to get your home back in order. The main stages include: * Evicting the critters * Clean up and decontamination * Followed by various levels of restoration as necessary and provided by the removal company.
