WHO IS MADS TOLLING? - Post 7:
Mads Tolling has a deep and personal connection to the history of the violin in jazz. Mads met perhaps the next most important and influential European jazz violinist in history, Svend Asmussen, known as ’The Fiddling Viking’ who played with Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Stuff Smith and Stephane Grappelli. Svend was still alive but no longer playing at age 99 when Mads was asked to join Svend’s former guitarist, Jacob Fischer to record a tribute album to Asmussen in 2015. He returned to Denmark to join Fischer in a tour of Scandanavia and Northern Europe celebrating Svend Asmussen’s huge contribution to jazz generally and to the violin in jazz in particular. Svend Asmussen passed away in 2017 just a few days short of his 101st birthday. But before passing, he donated all his lifetimes’ worth of sheet music to Mads.

So WHO IS Mads Tolling? Stay tuned for answers: He was raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he studied Suzuki violin from an early age. Here he is as a boy playing the street in Copenhagen with his sister in 1988 - and another with Suzuki himself in Sweden!
