🛶 Canoe culture has existed since time immemorial. There is evidence of races being held as far back as early as the 1880s and legend tells us our ancestors were able to tie their canoes to the top of Nch’kay’ (Mount Garibaldi), the tallest mountain in our territory during the Great Flood.

🛶 Canoe racing is a sacred cultural tradition and has proven good medicine for the soul. It reminds our People to be proud of our history and honour our ancestors. It connects communities and teaches valuable, sometimes lifesaving lessons. Lessons learned on the water create strong minds and hearts, that transfer into life on land.

Hello everyone!

The nature challenge is right around the corner, and this year Noons Creek Harchery will be a participant!

City Nature Challenge – Fish & Friends of Noons Creek

When: Saturday, April 27, 2024 – 9am to 11am (2 hours)

Where: Noons Creek Hatchery (340 Ioco Road – follow the trail behind the ice rink)

What: Discover wildlife around Noons Creek and the role they play in stream health. After a guided tour of this riparian area, use the iNaturalist app to identify insects and aquatic invertebrates, birds, fish, and plants around Noons Creek Hatchery. Use microscopes to get a close-up view of the critters in Noons Creek. You can download the iNaturalist app for iPhone or Android in advance of this event.

*Registration Required: Yes (all ages; youth/children-focused) – visit portmoody.ca/signmeup and select “Educational Programs” under “Dept. of Environment and Parks”

Port Moody, Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam are collaborating with stewardship groups to host free events and activities as part of the City Nature Challenge (April 26 to April 29, 2024), a friendly global competition that encourages people to find and document wild animals and plants in their cities.

The Metro Vancouver region will compete with other communities around the world to gather the most observations about nature, find the most species, and engage the most people from April 26 to April 29. Join us at an event or go out and document nature in your neighborhood. To have your observations counted for the Tri-Cities in this year’s Nature Challenge:

1) go to www.inaturalist.org or download the free iNaturalist app from the App Store or Google Play and create an account;
2) under Projects, search for and join “City Nature Challenge 2024: Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD)”; and
3) from April 26 to April 29, click Observe on the app or Add Observations on the website to add observations of any wild living or dead organism you see in Port Moody – including plants, animals, birds, fungi, etc. (or evidence of them, such as shells, feathers, or s**t).

If you require more information and for registration, please website: https://www.portmoody.ca/en/recreation-parks-and-environment/city-nature-challenge.aspx
