On the evening before our opening reception (July 25), we hosted an art + charity dinner gala with James Jean (), while supporting the amazing cause of the Canuck Place Childrenโs Hospice ().
We hosted an intimate dinner for our distinguished guests from Vancouver and beyond, who gathered to support not only Jeanโs remarkable exhibition in our city but also the indispensable work of the Canuck Place, whose compassionate care touches the lives of countless families in our community. The finale of the dinner included a lively auction of an impeccable series of extremely rare works by the artist produced in the past decadeโwith each lot promising a delicate story to tell.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the Paradox Hotel Vancouver team () for their full and undivided dedication to ensuring a smooth run of the evening, and the La Bomba Floristry team () who provided an exquisite design and the perfect ex*****on of bringing a lush meadow indoors for the dinner.

๐๐ ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ผ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ โ a solo exhibition by James Jean () is open!
In this exhibition, Jean creatively utilizes visual motifs that weave together mythological and folkloric narratives from both Western and Asian contexts, fostering a fusion that resonates with a diverse audience. His unique combination of characters, animals, and intricate patterns forms a tableau of cultural ambiguity, reflecting the complex identities forged by migration and globalization. He addresses the linguistic and semantic tensions within his heritage by depicting Chinese radicals in an unformed and abstract stateโa deliberate choice that highlights the simultaneous familiarity and estrangement, poignantly reflecting on the challenges of language and meaning, and the pursuit of an authentic personal history.

๐๐ฒ๐๐ฐ๐ต (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฐ) by James Jean ()
Edition of 300
Dimension: 24.75โ x 20โ
Fine art edition; with special embellishments
About ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฐ๐ต (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฐ):
Shaded in energetic jewel tones and populated by psychedelic fungal shapes, Fetch balances youthful motifs of play with a dystopian setting. Two figures burst from the paintingโs centre: a boy wearing a cap of leaves with a satchel of fruit-like orbs slung across his waist; and a deer-like creature with a broken antler. The scene ripples with kinetic motion: the deer-like creature is balanced on its back-legs, poised in canine anticipation, waiting for the boy to throw the severed fragment of the creatureโs antler clutched in his hand. The playful staging blends a sensation of child-like innocence with an underlying gesture towards a reverence for nature and all its life forms, which is crystallized in the layered significance to the deer motif.

๐๐๐๐ฟ๐๐โ ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ (2021) showcases Ryan Travis Christianโs () distinct style that melds the tragic and the erotic into an uncanny visual narrative. In this piece, Christian continues his exploration of early 20th-century animation aesthetics through his sfumato-heavy graphite drawings, now expanded into the realm of paint. The artwork features a whimsical yet unsettling scene where a red-roof house, anthropomorphized with desperate, cartoonish limbs, appears to be fleeing from a billowing cloud of smoke. This imagery resonates with the narrative of the 1952 Disney short film โThe Little House,โ where a house endures the overwhelming pressures of urban sprawl, only to find solace back in the countryside. Christianโs work, however, introduces a darker twist, suggesting a perpetual struggle against overwhelming forces. His use of soft-focus backgrounds and sharp, detailed foregrounds enhances the surreal and satirical tone, reflecting his fascination with the paradoxical blend of innocent cartoon imagery and sinister themes..

In recent days, CICA Vancouver has faced allegations of discrimination against an artist on the basis of their religious and cultural affiliation. We want to address these concerns directly and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to our mission and core values.
At the heart of CICA Vancouver is a dedication to cultivate artistic dialogue and community engagement while emphasizing inclusivity and representation. As a woman and BIPOC-led organization, prioritizing diversity is not just a goal but a guiding principle that informs every aspect of our work. Since our inception, we have been dedicated to showcase a pluralistic range of contemporary art and ideas through our multidisciplinary exhibitions and programming. We are grateful to have collaborated with a distinguished group of over 35 local and international artists, with more than two-thirds from visible minority backgrounds. These cross-cultural collaborations are a testament to our commitment to platforming diversity while fostering a safe and accessible environment for all.
Facing budgetary constraints is an unfortunate reality for many non-profit arts organizations, and regrettably, there are times when we must make difficult decisions due to limited resources. In this instance, we rescinded the decision to showcase three artists whose works we could no longer accommodate due to budgetary constraints, a tight time frame, and curatorial direction. It is essential to clarify that an artistโs cultural and religious affiliations would never serve as justifiable grounds for exclusion at CICA Vancouver.
We want to assure our community that our decision-making process for curating exhibitions is based solely on artistic merit and thematic relevance, guided by our organizationโs mission and values. Discrimination of any kind has no place within our organization, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to platforming diversity and ensuring equitable representation in everything we do.
Looking ahead, we will continue to embed the values of equity, inclusion, and diversity into every facet of our operations. Your ongoing support and understanding are invaluable as we navigate these complexities together.
