Thicker Than Oil

The UBC Philippines Studies Series has an upcoming event that may be of interest. This wednesday. "Thicker than Oil" (https://vimeo.com/116297900), is being screened along with another short film by Sean Yap Sei-Been Devlin titled, "Dear Pope" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpP7XGLg6CY) this Wednesday 6:30 PM at the Heartwood Community Cafe. Both films explore two different climate justice struggles. "Thicker than Oil" features land defenders on Burnaby Mountain protesting against energy company Kinder Morgan, and "Dear Pope" centres the voice of survivors of super-typhoon Haiyan in an open video letter to Pope Francis during his recent visit to the Philippines.

The screenings will be followed by a community forum and open discussion with some of the filmmakers, interviewees, and impacted community members. Climate change is affecting everyone across the globe, some communities more than others, which highlights the importance and the urgency for these conversations to happen.
