Continuing with our coverage of Guatemala, we have the beautiful Finca Santa Clara on the outskirts of Antigua. We first visited Ricardo Zelaya ( ) back in 2006 and ever since we have been a strong supporter of the amazing coffee that this farm produces. Our Guatemala Santa Clara blend is one of our most popular coffees and deservedly so. This great coffee even supports a school we built in Guatemala that teaches over 50 children a year.

Ricardo is constantly upgrading and improving Finca Santa Clara. Each time we visit he’s working on new ways to improve his coffee. Whether it’s improved irrigation, pruning, fertilizing or the latest in processing and drying methods, Ricardo Zelaya is a driving force in the Guatemalan coffee industry.

We recently sent two of our roasters down to Guatemala to learn about how and where some of our coffees are grown. This trip was facilitated by Cafe Justicia Canada, in collaboration with Cafe Justicia Guatemala - and the Campesino Committee of the Highlands (CCDA). We were accompanied by fellow coffee roasters across Canada, , , , .

BATW was the first coffee company to partner with Cafe Justicia back in 2001. Their vision of offering more than fair trade and instead what they call “solidarity trade”, was something we could easily get behind. These initiatives support numerous small Mayan farmers and communities in an effort to defend the rights of workers, recover stolen lands from communities and strengthen Mayan culture and spirituality.

So how can you show your support? Our El Paraiso single origin dark roast uses beans exclusively from these co-ops and proceeds from this coffee go directly back to farmers and the CCDA to further support social justice initiatives in the region.
