Sai Di is a Chinese Canadian artist who builds living systems and multi-media installations to decode the present reality at the intersection of science and ecology. Her work develops poetic nature/techno synthesis at the threshold of sensory perceptions through discursive material experiments, sound and performance gestures. She is an active member of the performance group Cuerpo Collective which enquires how the body may exist within the very function of art production as a means for healing and decolonization. She holds a BSc degree from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and a BFA from the University of British Columbia.

Woojae Kim combines his research on biology with somatic experiences. He is currently making Makgeolli to learn about microbiology, and the histories and relationships between living creatures and the land. Through words used in both scientific and cultural discussions, such as “colonization”, “culture” and “diversity”, he observes how we relate to each other and to non-human others. Kim received an MFA from Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College. He lives in Vancouver, on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh and səl̓ílwəta First Nations.
Woojae Kim collaborated on the audio for his piece with Seren Bradley (.web) a sound artist living on Wabanaki land (Portland, ME). Book launch for at Access Gallery!
Friday 28 April from 6 to 8pm
You are invited to the book launch of artmamas: Intermedial Conversations on Art, Motherhood and Caregiving (2023). This publication emerges from our PLOT residency at Access Gallery in Vancouver during the fall of 2021. The works, texts, and images presented herein reflect this generative process while also pointing to other resources, mediated spaces, artworks, artforms, and dialogues. From digital art, to zoom recordings, to drawings, curated film programs, artist archives, poetry, photography, sound art, performance, painting, sculpture, social movements, and blog posts, this publication encompasses an interconnected, intergenerational, and intermedial meditation on art and motherhood as expanded fields of knowledge production. We hope you can join us in this celebration!
Published by the art/mamas with the generous support of Access Gallery, the Canada Council for the Arts, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, VIVO Media Arts Centre, and the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of British Columbia (CUFA BC). We are grateful for all of the support in making this project possible.

PARCEL
noun — gift, portion of land, fragment of a whole, a collection, a bundle
verb — wrap, divide
Access Gallery is putting together a standalone publication, PARCEL, which seeks to better understand its own positioning as a centre of cultural production and dissemination at the nexus of multiple stories/histories, neighbourhoods, and waterways. This location is steeped in stories of convergence and displacement, colonial impositions, gentrification, and importantly, ongoing acts of resistance, joy, and care. Access invites reflective daydreams of (critical) possibility in the form of unpublished writing and visual art.

Sooyeong Lee (she/her) is a Korean-born interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto, Ontario. Inspired by her own journey of coping with uncertainty and trauma, Lee's work stems from the practice of care and mindfulness.
Lee explores our collective vulnerability and resilience through food, textiles, photography, performance, and installation. She examines everyday perishable objects and her surroundings, sometimes her habits, to investigate strength in their forms of changing, adapting, and aging.
Previously trained in Illustration at Sheridan College, Lee graduated from OCAD University with a BFA in Sculpture and Installation. Lee’s work has been shown at Harbourfront Centre (Toronto, ON) and was presented at Flotilla (Charlottetown, PE) by Eyelevel (Halifax, NS). Most recently she has completed her curatorial residency for Tendresse! (2022) by Caravansérail (Rimouski, QC) and Alchemy Residency (Prince Edward County, ON).

Please join us for the opening reception of The Tangerine Project, this Friday 13 January from 7 to 9pm
The Tangerine Project by Sooyeong Lee | 14 January to 8 April 2023
The Tangerine Project presents work by Sooyeong Lee (Toronto, ON) which considers vulnerability, our shared anxieties, deterioration, the body, and care. The exhibition as a whole presents the artist’s attempts to hold vulnerability and generosity in a photographic moment or handcrafted object—a bruised fruit, a protective cloth, her body, our handwritten notes, a rotting peel. ”This is a survey of the tangerines as an extension of myself—my resilience, vulnerability, and restoration—my journey.”
*NOTE: Masks are required at the gallery during regular gallery hours and the opening reception. Thank you for helping take care of our visiting artist, staff, and each other.*

Finally, yours truly, .draw.ing! 🤓 It feels a bit strange to post my own bio, so I'd like simply to re-introduce myself to our followers.
My name is Katie Belcher, and I've been the Director/Curator of Access Gallery since late 2017. I'm an artist, curator, and cultural worker of white European and UK settler ancestry, based in Vancouver, Canada, the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ Nations. I'm excited to relaunch a full program in January 2023, and am grateful for the support of my board, and the gallery's two new staff.
These days I'm spending more energy in the kitchen than in the studio, and trust that this is also feeding my artistic practice.

Our Story
An artist-run centre established in 1991 and situated in Vancouver’s historic Chinatown, Access Gallery is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and presenting the work of emergent artists, curators and cultural practitioners, as well as those entering a new experimental phase of their practice. We enable critical conversations and risk taking through new configurations of audience, artists and community. With this mandate, Access occupies a uniquely important position in Vancouver’s cultural landscape. The gallery often provides the occasion for an artist’s first solo exhibition (and have provided important exhibition opportunities for some of Canada's most successful contemporary artists at early stages in their careers). Access orients these artists to a wider dialogue and visibility within the community, while offering that community the opportunity to encounter new artists and artistic approaches through brave and engaging programming.
Access produces a dynamic and ambitious yearly program of exhibitions, publications, our travelling artist residency Twenty-Three Days at Sea (2015-2017), our recently launched initiative for collaborative projects and occupation, PLOT; as well as outreach programs that include local, national and international collaborations, talks, performances, screenings, readings, workshops, walking tours and symposia. Committed to reflecting a broad range of artistic disciplines as well as cultural and socio-political concerns relevant to our contemporary world, our programming is nationally and internationally recognized. Access Gallery compensates artists in accordance with CARFAC guidelines, and is a long-standing member of the Pacific Association of Artist Run Centres (PAARC).
PLOT is a space intended for occupation by collectives, artist initiatives, nascent or small-scale organizations and those conducting itinerant projects who seek space, greater visibility and, most importantly, who desire to cultivate a relationship with a community or public. For more information, please visit our website here: http://accessgallery.ca/plot/
Access Gallery acknowledges the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the province of British Columbia through the BC Arts Council and BC Gaming Commission, the City of Vancouver, the Burrard Arts Foundation, the Koerner Foundation, the Audain Foundation for the Visual Arts, as well as our valuable donors, members and volunteers.
With gratitude as guests, Access is located on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
