Anyone else binge-watch ? Interesting reading of the witcher for non-native English speakers to pay attention to.
Here are a few things I noticed:
1) Notice the pacing of his reading. He slows down or pauses at the ends of sentences to intentionally finish the thought, catches his breath, and makes eye contact with the camera.
2) He speaks relatively fast but takes his time with key nouns, verbs and adjectives that are important in the sentence.
3) He changes his loudness, particularly during dialogue to denote a change from narration to character voice.
The reading is engaging and read aloud in a manner that conveys interest and story-telling. Add in the Witcher clips, sound design, clips of Henry Cavill and the book text itself and BAM...you've got a youtube clip worth watching.
HAPPY BINGING!

A very interesting dive into communication habits and what can impact your charisma. I'll be taking some of these tips to heart because I for sure wouldn't qualify myself as charismatic. I'm more of the quiet, stand-in-the-corner, embrace the wallflower kinda person. There's luckily also a video about Sophie Turner and anxiety/awkwardness for that.
I think another necessary plug is that this is NOT meant to disrespect or criticize Brie Larson. At least the way I see it, it's a critique for educational purposes to better oneself.
Check it out for the discussion on intonation, emphasis, nonverbal gestures and overall delivery to better communicate your points and avoid miscommunication.

On the same note as my last post, acting is a huge and interesting field that parallels accent modification. There's also a field called "Dialect coaching" where coaches are hired to aid actors in developing a character's sound. Let's say you've got an actor from the UK but the role is for an American English speaker. Send in the dialect coach!
By better representing a character's cultural and ethnic background via their speech, the actor's performance is more believable and the character is more authentic. This ultimately means for a more believable performance.
Imagine following a character who is supposed to be American and all of a sudden, they sound British. It would ruin the moment and you would no longer be immersed in the film or invested in the character!
Movie Accent Expert Breaks Down 28 More Actors' Accents | WIRED Dialect coach Erik Singer once again analyzes the accents of some of Hollywood's biggest names. How accurate were their accents, really? Check out more from ...
Performance arts and acting parallels accent modification training extremely closely in that they both target effect communication.
Whereas accent modification targets the most effective way to communicate your individual thoughts and ideas effectively to others who may not share your ethnic/cultural background, actors target the most effective way to communicate their character's thoughts and ideas in the most accurate and representative way that their character may feel. Actors try to genuinely portray their character's identity so you believe they are, in fact, their character.
This means that every pause, every stutter, every breath, and every word is intentional to portray a character.

In this way, it is a fascinating to know how actors read and interpret a script -- to witness how actors twist or interpret a series of written words to make a performance comes to life.

Stumbled over a fantastic video that highlights many nuanced aspects of the English language and the importance of suprasegmental aspects of speech.
A few things to highlight:
1) Having native English speech does not mean your communication is perfect in English. There are a lot of aspects to the language that native English speakers can struggle with too.
2) The up-and-down musicality of English is important.
3) Being comfortable auditing yourself and seeking feedback is an essential part of growing as a communicator and person.

I think the analysis of Louis CK's joke is a prime example of knowing not only the specific words involved but the rhythm, pacing, pausing, intonation, stress and everything in-between. does an amazing job in the analysis and it highlights just how much attention even native-English speakers can put into their craft and verbal communication.
So when a non-native English speaker wants to target their communication, it is a job of finding the balance between "saying the words like a native English speaker" as well as "saying the words in a manner that delivers the most value"

A good healthy amount of self-motivation and self-interest with this post.
Whenever I think about being tired, wanting to laze about or not being 100% ready to post something, I think of this quote. For me, it is a remark on my desire for perfectionism, for the stars to align and for myself to be allowed to not commit.
The issue with this is that months go by and maybe even years, and things still aren't moving along. That was the way my accent consultation social media posting was going. That's how a lot of the "extra frills" beyond the actual consulting service were swept under the rug for me.
What finally gave me the push was the guilt of knowing that I could provide value. I believe that I have some unique perspectives on the industry of English learning and accent modification and the guilt of knowing and not sharing what I know was ultimately a big part of it all.
Many times, English pronunciation is a neglected or poorly communicated aspect of English learning that doesn't get the spotlight on social media. Many times, the things that I see are mainly idioms, grammatical issues, vocabulary and slang. So, the thought of knowing that those are not the only things and that I could produce some content for the areas I find lacking are the rationale for these posts.
I think the quote should also resonate with people wanting to shape and learn a native English accent. If you want one, you have to dedicate the time and effort necessary to develop one. There's no shortcuts around it. So if it is important priority for you, don't do it soon. Do it now!

And this is the reason why English is a hard language. There are ALWAYS exceptions.
It is amazing that native English speakers pick up the rules without explicitly going through each and every single word.
It is also a problem when people ask, "Are there any rules I can learn?". There are always exceptions unfortunately that need to be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Except for everything..
Despite his intense dedication to crafting his English communication skills, even makes errors.
"We think because of the technologyΜΆ. We can make the technologyΜΆ very incrusive. That every small company can use it. This is my dream"
He drops the final vowel in technology βοΈand substitutes the /l/ in inclusive for an /r/.
This is not meant to be a post criticizing his Englishπ¬ communication skills but to highlight π¦ a few things because it may resonate more to hear a non-native English high profile people speak than me (a native English speaker) trying to imitate a non-native English speaker and failing miserably at doing it while simultaneously offending a whole bunch of people.
1) High profile speakers and successful people are human and can make non-native English pronunciation differences. It is something that is the natural consequence of English not being their first language. It is not preventing them from being successful nor does it suggest they need to fix anything.
2) Despite demonstrating an intense focus and concentration on improving his English communication, he still makes mistakes. As a result, it's helpful to treat English communication skills as a lifelong journey of discovery and improvement rather than an end-goal that until reached means you have failed.
My subjective rating is 4 stars across accentedness, intelligibilty and ease of understanding. There are some instances where his English does sound non-native but it is inconsistent. Other times, you can hardly tell because his rhythm and pacing are largely appropriate. Primarily, it's the grammatical errors and intermittent mispronunciations that give it away.

Building upon concepts from the last post, is an example of someone with a non-native with fairly high ease of understanding and intelligibility. Yes, you can tell he is not a native speaker, but he is able to communicate in English proficiently.
For argument's sake, my subjective ratings for him are:
- 3/5 βοΈ (5/5 being consistent with a general American English accent)
- 4/5 βοΈ (5/5 being no problem)
- 4/5 βοΈ (5/5 being no problem)
The main reason, I deducted scores is because it was difficult to understand "I said to myself" which required multiple repetitions. He does not fully articulate the /f/ sound so you barely hear it before he transitions to the next word.
The ultimate point though, is that despite sounding non-native, Arnold's communication focuses on ease of understanding and intelligibility. He has starred in many movies, was the Governor of California and has been in the spotlight for many years. His has in fact become an iconic aspect of his brand.
-----
Without a clear understanding or distinction between the 3 aforementioned ratings, a client may summarize difficulties communicating as "because of my accent". The intention of this clip is to show that you can be accented and maintain a high degree of communicative intelligibility so your accentedness is not the primary concern.
