When CHFCA member Ivan de La Cuesta was completing his master’s degree, he stumbled upon a hydrogen fuel cell made by Horizon Educational.
He started researching Horizon and discovered their internationally successful Hydrogen Grand Prix racing program. While watching a video from one of the H2GP World Finals, Ivan noticed there were over 20 country flags displayed at the event representing the nationalities of the competing teams, but no Canadian flag…
Three years later, Ivan is taking the first ever Canadian H2GP team to the 2023 World Finals, where they will compete against 30 other teams from around the globe. His dream of seeing the Canadian flag fly above the H2GP racetrack will finally be fulfilled.
But the Grand Prix isn’t just about racing – it’s also about inspiring the next generation of science and technology professionals to guide us into a renewable energy future. Ivan’s next mission is to make that opportunity available to as many students as possible in Canada.

Horizon Educational is leading the industry when it comes to global hydrogen education! Their flagship educational program, the Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix, is the world’s largest hydrogen racing event, where thousands of students from over 20 countries design, engineer, and race 1:10 scale fuel cell electric cars powered by hydrogen.
This year’s world final will be hosted in Las Vegas from September 11th – 14th at the RE+ 2023 Expo and will also feature the first ever Canadian H2GP team.
