🧺 Last month our CityU in Canada students came together to hold their 3rd Annual Student Picnic!
The students enjoyed a fantastic day of fun and creativity.
2024 Master of Counselling graduate Reshmi Chandra shared with us how her CityU experience allowed her to transform her potential to care for the wellbeing of others.
"I turned my trauma into something beautiful.
I remember first struggling with my mental health and not knowing what to do or who to turn to. There were no role models at the time who spoke so openly about mental health to look up to.
Once I started to share my story, I realized how many felt the same way. It was unbelievable how many struggled in silence. From that day on I decided to be a voice in my community.
Everything I did since high school was towards my goal of becoming a counsellor. Any volunteer or work experience had to be around helping me get into university and then my masters.
It was a struggle. Living with mental illness and navigating school, full-time work, relationships, self-care and so on are not easy. I had some unexpected challenges come up during the process as well. I struggled but somehow I did it.
My only goal is to inspire others who struggle to let them know they can still achieve their goals. Their mental illness isn’t a character flaw. Yes, there may be more barriers we have to overcome, but it’s still possible. You can still achieve great things, even with an invisible disability."
