Summer has arrived and if you are looking to head out in the waters, you might catch a glimpse of PLEA's canoe. Yes, we have a canoe!
Named Spirit of the North, it is a thirteen-seat fiberglass clipper vessel. Operating it requires trained and certified staff as canoe skippers and first aid attendants.
In order to prepare the canoe, we first had our Canoe Wake-Up Brushing Ceremony that took place on May 16 at Aldergrove Regional Park.
This Coast Salish tradition involves "waking up" the canoes after the winter to cleanse and prepare them for the upcoming months on the water. We were honored to have Wes Nahanee, a Squamish First Nation member and Knowledge Keeper, join us again this year to host the ceremony. The ceremony featured nine staff members as witnesses, life givers who brushed the canoe, and a male holding the sacred water container.
Currently, our Adult Services program has seven staff members trained as skippers to run its canoe program at Rocky Point in Port Moody and the Boat Launch in Fort Langley. And on May 30th, we successfully hosted our first canoe day of the year taking 16 participants out! The participants were thrilled to have this program back, as they greatly enjoy the activity and the experience of being out on the land and water.
If you see Spirit of the North and the PLEA team this summer, give us a wave!

Today is Moose Hide Campaign Day across Canada!
The Moose Hide Campaign began as a BC-born Indigenous-led grassroots movement to engage men and boys in ending violence towards women and children. It has since grown into a nationwide movement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians from local communities, First Nations, governments, schools, colleges/universities, police forces and many other organizations – all committed to taking action to end this violence.
The Moose Hide Campaign recognizes that all forms of violence are unacceptable, regardless of gender. We see the disproportionate number of women who are victims and the importance of engaging men and boys in addressing this issue. We also know that “shame and blame” isn’t the answer.
Did you know?
• Every year there are over 60,000 physical or sexual assaults against women in BC – more than 1,000 per week
• One in three women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime (Stats Canada, 2006)
• In 2014 there was a daily average of 7,969 women and children staying in shelters across Canada because it was not safe at home (Statistics Canada)
• There were 1,181 cases of missing or murdered Aboriginal women in Canada between 1980 and 2012, according to the RCMP, with BC recording more than any other province (Native Women’s Association of Canada, 2010). However, according to grassroots organizations the number is much higher, closer to 4,000
• Domestic violence is preventable.
Since the Campaign began over 10 years ago along the Highway of Tears, thousands of communities and organizations across Canada have held Moose Hide Campaign events and joined the annual Moose Hide Campaign Day ceremony and fast. People of all ages, genders and backgrounds are invited to take part in Moose Hide Campaign activities.
