I've just posted a new blog on my website about the importance of paint color placement. Choosing great colors is important but the correct placement can make or break the look of your house.

Just a little before and after of a duplex I consulted on that was recently finished.

A classy grey for this stucco duplex in Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver.

Just because you have white vinyl windows doesn't mean you have to use a stark white trim, what you can do instead is layer in the colours.
I really wish more people would follow that advice!

Before and After or Why I Love Wood Windows.
This is just a taste of a project that I have been working on in the Silver Lake neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

I love doing color consultations in-person, but the beauty of online consultations means I can reach a much wider audience and we still come up with amazing results.

I've just posted this blog on heritage house colours to my website.

It's taken from a blog I wrote a number of years ago for the WordPress site that I had at the time and is still languishing on the internet.

This house was one of my favourite projects and I've worked with the clients on the entire exterior and interior of the house.

The garden isn't done yet but I've been chomping at the bit to get some photos of this house posted.

I love this combination and what is really important to know is that the trim is NOT white!
It's actually a grey called Half Moon Crest.

In person the colours are softer and blend together so smoothly.

When I first met with this client she was thinking of black or a dark grey for the stucco!
I'm so glad I managed to convince her otherwise.
The grey/green body is so much more interesting and it will all look really fantastic when the landscaping is done.

A big shout out to Luke for embracing my colour scheme and doing a great job of the painting.

So many painters just want to do the same old boring stuff, so it's really great when I find a painter who really enjoys applying the colours that I have specified.

Paint Tester Pots! Friend or Foe? True story. I was just at my local Benjamin Moore retailer. As I was waiting for my paint to be mixed a woman came in who had order paint tester pots online. I had a quick look in the box, she must of had 10 - 12 in there.

The young woman (who happens to be the in-store colour consultant) says in an off-hand manner "the CSP colours aren't really meant for tester pots, so the colour isn't going to look the same. The customer had no clue what the woman was talking about.

I'm going to keep this short, my friends. In Benjamin Moore, if the colour number begins with CSP and then three digits, for example: CSP 565, then DO NOT order tester pots, the colour in the tester will not be accurate - why?

CSP stands for Full Spectrum Color. What does that mean? It means that more pigments are used to make up those colours than in the other colours from BM that don't begin with CSP.

It's impossible to get the pigment ratio correct for a tester pot, because they have to scale it down so much.

For example; let's say a gallon calls for 3 drops of a certain pigment. How are you going to scale that down for a tester pot - you can't.

The woman working at the store told the woman, straight out, the colours won't look the same because they'll be missing some pigments.

Why do the paint stores do this? All they're doing is confusing the customer.

Tester pots are often not accurate. Also, tester pots usually only come in one sheen level and that may not be the sheen you're going to use.

Does sheen make a difference to the colour - yes!

BM tester pots only come in a satin finish, you're probably not going to put a satin finish on your walls.

My heart went out to this customer, but I couldn't really say anything because at BM they know I'm a colour consultant and they wouldn't be too happy with me if I interfered.

Tester pots are not the magic bullet that people think they are. Here's a link to a post I've written about them.

Another project that has just been finished. The owners of this row of townhouses wanted an updated neutral colour that felt warm and friendly. For this project I chose colours from the Sherwin Williams colour palette. They have a really nice selection of warm neutral colours.

This new build is finally finished and I'm feeling pleased with how it turned out. Really lovely neutral palette with that pop of Robin's Egg Blue on the door. Feels warm and welcoming, doesn't it.

For all you painted furniture enthusiasts - here's the real deal! This lovely chest of drawers lives in the heritage house of one of my clients. Isn't she a beauty! Can I also just draw your attention to the tiny bit of wood trim that comes up the inside corner from the baseboards. Luv this house!

It's mid-February; now is the time to get organized if you are planning on painting the exterior of your home this spring or summer.
Always work with a colour consultant prior to getting a quote from a painter.
This way you'll know exactly how many colours will be used and what those colours will be. This makes it much easier for the painter to give an accurate quote.
