Tenant Feature - Advance Concussion Clinic - Health and Technology District Advance Concussion Clinic (ACC) is an interdisciplinary clinic dedicated to the management and treatment of concussions. At ACC, we are passionate about advancing concussion care using evidence-based best practice to ensure a positive and measurable recovery.
We are proud to share recently published ACC original research — leveraging AI to inform concussion subtyping!
https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2021.716643/full
Concussion subtyping helps to identify what areas of a person’s function are affected from their injury, and design treatment plans to help patients recover. Our novel use of AI in this process enabled the identification and characterization of five statistically coherent and distinct concussion subtypes, free of the bias and other limitations that may be part of other subtype approaches.
This peer-reviewed research puts forward the idea that we can do better in understanding concussion in terms of Complexity rather than severity, and that using AI to capture the true heterogeneity and complex system disruptions associated with concussion is the first step in coming up with a complete and comprehensive treatment plan to get concussion patients better!
Stay tuned for ACC’s expansion on this machine learning approach to clinical practice — already in progress!
Machine Learning for Subtyping Concussion Using a Clustering Approach Background: Concussion subtypes are typically organized into commonly affected symptom areas or a combination of affected systems, an approach that may be flawed by bias in conceptualization or the inherent limitations of interdisciplinary expertise. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determ...
ACC provides baseline testing for teams and individual athletes. Baseline testing is recommended for all athletes, to be repeated each year, to aid in the diagnosis and treatment planning should that athlete suffer a concussion. Pre- and post-injury scores are compared, supporting diagnoses and informing recovery, therefore ensuring the most comprehensive and safe Return to Play decisions.
Athletes who play competitive and collision sports require special management and evaluation to ensure a full recovery. We have supported athletes from P*e Wee to professional, Junior B to Olympic-level, high school, and beer league members, as well as a full spectrum of recreational athletes in achieving successful Return to Play.

We are so excited that the Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing, and Lieutenant Governor have committed to further concussion awareness in BC. Promoting awareness about this injury and its impact, not just on athletes, but everyday people involved in work, recreation, and just drivers who end up in MVA’s, is extremely important. At ACC we believe in the importance of awareness, but also in the importance of action. That’s why we take our jobs as concussion care providers so seriously, as we believe that awareness is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to tackling the concussion epidemic. Head to our website to see ways in which you can better manage and recover from concussion.

Has your child suffered a concussion? Return To Play (RTP) and activity is everyone’s goal after concussion. But returning too soon puts an individual or athlete at the greatest risk of re-injury or prolonged recovery. Guidance is needed for individuals of any age who suffer concussions to Return them to competitive or recreational sports and activities. For some, this process may take only days and recovery can be achieved fairly quickly and uneventfully.
Many individuals suffer symptoms for weeks or longer, and in these instances, expert guidance and assistance is vital. As mentioned in our previous post, athletes who play competitive and collision sports require special management and evaluation to ensure a full recovery.
ACC offers baseline testing as a tool to view the most commonly affected thinking systems when they are healthy, working normally, and supporting your child’s normal athletic and academic performance. ACC’s evidence-informed approach supports both clarity and confidence in clearing students and athletes for the safest and most expedient Returns to their sports, classroom, and their lives.

The vestibular system is a delicate and intricate system comprising the inner ear and the vestibular centers in the brain. It is affected in more than half of people who suffer concussive injuries and can be a major driver of persistent symptoms.
A vestibular assessment has been recommended in the most up to date evidence as imperative following a concussion, as when left unaddressed, can lead to prolonged recoveries. Our team of physiotherapists are trained in vestibular rehabilitation and utilize evidence-based techniques to aid in the resolution of vestibular symptoms associated with concussion.

ACC is dedicated to positive change through the advancement of concussion care using evidence-based practice to ensure the most complete recovery possible. This includes using the most up-to-date technologies available like Plantiga. Plantiga is a movement analytics software platform that is powered by insoles inserted into the shoes.
This new technology aims to quantify the biomechanics of the lower limb while walking, which has implications for assessing postural control, stability, gait analysis, injury prevention, and recovery tracking. With measurements such as asymmetry load, total load, contact time, flight time, rotation force, landing force and acceleration, Plantiga offers a ground-breaking look into the complex and newly studied world of biomechanics and postural control after a concussion.

Aside from physical impairments, a concussion can also can cause psychological distress or exacerbate pre-existing conditions.
ACC provides psychological services as part of its interdisciplinary treatment model, as research continues to show that the psychological domain can be responsible for prolonged recoveries after concussion.
The most up-to-date evidence recommends that along with an oculomotor, vestibular, and autonomic assessment, a mood/psychiatric assessment is equally as important in ensuring all arenas that have been affected by the concussion are targeted in ACC’s comprehensive rehabilitation framework.

Successful, complete Return To Learn (RTL) must be achieved before returning student-athletes to play and sport. Students should be performing at their academic ‘baseline’ before returning to sport. On the flip side, extended time away from school, peer groups, sport or extra-curricular activities can impose severe penalties on a developing child. Permanent changes can be imposed with poorly managed recoveries.
While confusing and daunting for some students, youth-athletes, their parents and schools, successful Returns to school are possible when coordinated with all relevant parties. ACC’s RTL approach involves close coordination with elementary and high schools as well as colleges and universities, and are informed by individualized treatment plans, facilitated by neuropsychologists and other expert health care providers with experience in concussion management and RTL pathways.
ADVANCE Concussion Clinic is excited to be collaborating with as we work to foster meaningful change in management for . We hope to provide education, protocols and to allow athletes to manage concussion when it occurs, get the treatment needed for , and make informed decisions to . Stay tuned!

Have you had a cognitive change after a concussion? This is a common symptom and is understandably worrisome for many patients. It is now known that many cognitive challenges, including problems with attention, concentration, memory, focus, and information processing are, in part, driven by physical impairments.
Vestibular and oculomotor rehabilitation is vital in addressing the cognitive challenges that most patients experience. Our neuropsychology experts further support and identify persistent problems or barriers to normal function in school or work environments and monitor the resolution of cognitive symptoms over time.

At ACC, we are dedicated to positive change through the advancement of concussion care using evidence-based practice and cutting-edge technology to ensure the most complete recovery possible. ACC uses Saccade Analytics to help our patients recover by utilizing virtual reality to measure and quantify eye movements. Saccade Analytics measures quick alternating eye movements, eye coordination, gaze stability, motion sensitivity, reaction time, and more.
Through the 8-minute test, a metrics-based report is generated, which can be used to track patient progress and can aid in decision making regarding Return to Play, Return to Learn, or discharge planning. In concussion rehabilitation, it becomes challenging to obtain purely objective data over time, as patients become familiar with the tests. With Saccade Analytics, straightforward data and metrics are delivered, which is invaluable in concussion management and care.
