While others plan to surprise and celebrate their relationship with their mothers…

New clients are suddenly transported back to childhood when their mothers made them feel they weren’t good enough…

Some narcissistic mothers are very subtle with their criticism…

A tone is enough to send their adult children on a downward spiral questioning their worth as a human being.

Back to when there was “something wrong with them” because they didn’t complete their chores…

Or wore the wrong outfit…

Or worse…

They were born a girl instead of a boy.

I’ve heard such horrible things about mothers from clients.

Some were told they were mistakes.

Some felt unlovable or unwanted, believing they deserved the abuse they sustained.

Some never felt safe, having to tiptoe around mother’s explosive moods.

On the other hand, many of my clients used their unconscious pain to fuel their success.

Some became athletes…

Musicians…

CEO’s…

They accomplished great things but at a great cost…

Despite being successful to the casual observer, they face a relentless inner critic.

One that is with them at all times, questioning their every move…

Doubting their judgment.

Crippling their confidence.

Seemingly condemned to seek validation from the outside world because mom never gave them anything real to hang on to.

How many fans they have…

How many dollars are in their bank account…

What their title is…

What others will think if I say X or do Y…

They became used to conditional love.

It’s my job to help them trust themselves on all levels.

In and out.

Regardless of what others think.

If you or someone you know is struggling with Mother’s Day, take this as a sign that something isn’t wrong with you.

Something is wrong with the way you were treated.

You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.

Most of my clients still choose not to engage their mothers on Mother’s Day, though society tells them they should.

Not because they’re still suffering…

But because Little Sally doesn’t deserve to be thrown into the Lion’s Den so Mom can show off her trophy card to her friends.

Heal yourself first.

I love when I see a client yawn.

It's not disrespectful.

It's the nervous system and brain's intricate dance during EMDR therapy: as traumatic memories are processed, tension releases, often manifesting as a yawn—a sign of the mind and body letting go.

Sometimes we as therapists yawn as well.

Our mirror neurons are working along side our clients, and as we administer bilateral stimulation, we to some degree process as well.
