•
You want to use skincare and cosmetic products, like , which are formulated to work in harmony with your skin made from ethically-sourced, plant-based ingredients that are free of heavy oils, silicones and waxes. Their skin-transforming products are made with the health of your skin in mind, particularly skin that faces challenges such as dehydration, redness, sun damage and showing signs of premature aging. What's the best way to bring positive energy into your home? Our homes should be places we love, where we enjoy waking up and coming back home to.
•
If you want to breathe more life into your living space, add some plants, salt lamps and crystals. They help in creating a happy, healthy and welcoming environment.
•
Salt lamps and crystals: Himalayan salt lamps are claimed to improve air quality, boost mood and help you sleep. Although some of their health claims are not supported by science, Himalayan salt lamps may have other benefits.
These include:
* They are attractive: If you like the way they look, they could be an attractive addition to your home.
* They create a nice ambiance: They could help create a relaxing atmosphere that helps you unwind.
* They might help limit light in the evening: If you struggle to sleep, using dim lights in the evening may help you get to sleep faster.
Overall, these points may make them a great addition to your home.
•
Plants: Multiple studies have proven that indoor plants keep you healthier and happier, offering both psychological and physical health benefits that include:
* Improving your mood.
* Reducing fatigue.
* Lowering stress and anxiety.
* Improving office performance and focus.
* Boosting healing and pain tolerance.
* And so much more!!

Supplements can help assure that you get enough of the vital substances the body needs to function; others may help reduce the risk of disease. But supplements should not replace complete meals which are necessary for a healthful diet – so, be sure you eat a variety of foods as well. 🍏
•
Don’t know if supplements are right for you? Unsure of what supplements to take? Contact us at NatCan and one of our lovely Naturopathic Doctors would be happy to help!!

•
How do you unwind? What measures do you take to ensure that you aren’t operating on empty? How do you fill your love tank? … It all starts with self-care. Now I know it’s easier said than done, there is definitely a struggle to carve time out of the day, week or month when life is sooo busy, but if we make ourself a priority and take time to shine the diamond that we are, we are better at everything else in our life.
•
We can’t share with others a resource that we lack ourselves. The critical starting point is to take our own mental health temperature. How am I doing? What will help me combat anxiety? Am I drinking, eating, or sleeping, or crying too much? What do I need to do to stay connected?
•
Follow up with a plan. Begin with keeping to your normal routine as much as possible. Take a shower. Brush your teeth. Put on clothes that you feel good in. One of the best ways to manage through chaos is to anchor yourself in routine. Schedule regular exercise, which has well-documented mental health benefits (it doesn’t need to be the gym, get outside and go for a fresh air walk). Try taking up a regular meditation, if you haven’t already — there truly is no time like the present. Scheduling when you read or watch the news can help keep your consumption measured. If it triggers adverse emotions and bogs you down, skip it for a while, or only consume enough to be current on your local developments. Do not follow the stock market every day, unless you’re thrilled by emotional roller coasters.
Next, think of ways to be mentally engaged either through work or activities such as crossword or jigsaw puzzles, games, reading, or writing. Start a journal or blog. Self-reflection will allow you to make meaning of what is happening. Stay connected with family and friends. If possible, pursue your hobbies and when you can, get a change of scenery.
•
Take good care of yourself. Because we need you.

Let’s talk Magnesium. Magnesium is one of the minerals I prescribe most often in my naturopathic practice because it is so important for a wide variety of functions in the body. We often hear about Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) which we add into our baths. Although there is only preliminary evidence (hasn’t been fully proven), the theory is that when you soak in an Epsom salt bath, the magnesium gets into your body through your skin.
•
Let’s explore the several uses for magnesium:
1. Supports energy, mood and stress hormones – magnesium is a cofactor for many enzyme reactions in the body that regulate the production of various agents including: ATP – the body’s energy units; and Serotonin – an important mood stabilizing neurotransmitter. As a result, low magnesium contributes to fatigue, depression and worsens anxiety/panic attacks.
2. Regulates bowel movements – low magnesium levels lead to constipation and often restoring levels can normalize bowel function.
3. Regulates blood pressure – magnesium prevents blood vessel spasms which helps to regulate overall blood pressure.
4. Muscle tension and other musculoskeletal conditions – magnesium is an important nutrient for muscle relaxation. Low levels are associated with increased muscle tension and trigger point formation leading to back pain, neck pain etc. In addition, muscle cramping is a sign of low magnesium in the body.
5. Decreases menstrual cramping – magnesium is a smooth muscle relaxant and as a result is very useful in decreasing uterine spasm that cause pelvic pain in women during menstruation.
6. Improves insomnia – magnesium is required for serotonin production which in turn makes melatonin which regulates sleep.
•
Magnesium has many other functions and can be found in foods including nuts, seeds, eggs, dark green vegetables, kelp, legumes, bananas and fish. However, the recommended daily allowance for magnesium is 350mg per day, but this is just enough to prevent deficiency. To address the above health conditions, higher dosing is often required. Also, there are a number of different forms of magnesium, but your Naturopath can prescribe the correct type and dose of magnesium for your needs.
Across cultures, borders, and ethnic lines, people around the world hold a deep personal connection to food. Food brings people together, adding merriment, joy, and interest to a variety of occasions.
•
Nutrition is a fundamental component of the journey toward optimal health and well-being. The personal and emotional connections people have to the foods that they eat are among the chief reasons why long-lasting nutritional change is such a challenge, even in the face of medical necessity or chronic disease risk.
•
Chronic diseases are perhaps the most prevalent causes of mortality and morbidity in the North America and costs billions of dollars per year, both in terms of health care costs and loss of productivity.
•
Physicians trained through conventional medical training receive only a nominal amount of nutrition education. In contrast, the nutrition curriculum in naturopathic medical school is centered on a series of rigorous, evidence informed nutrition courses that offer a cumulative base of knowledge that is built over the entire four-year education program. Naturopathic medical curricula at a four-year, accredited college of naturopathic medicine includes an average of 155 hours of classroom nutrition education coupled with over 1200 hours of clinical education wherein application of nutrition principles is a foundational component of nearly every patient interaction.
•
In naturopathic medical school, nutrition education includes specific training in a broad array of nutritional principles. Having an in-depth knowledge of each, along with an understanding of how they all fit together, coupled with many hours of clinical application leads naturopathic doctors to be experts in the development and implementation of individualized, tailored nutritional prescriptions that support patient outcomes and empower patients to execute better nutrition choices.
•
Optimized nutrition forms the foundation for health across all aspects of physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual health. “You are what you eat!!”
•
•
Let’s Talk Sleep Hygiene 💤
•
Paying attention to sleep hygiene is one of the most straightforward ways that you can set yourself up for better sleep. Strong sleep hygiene means having both a bedroom environment and daily routines that promote consistent, uninterrupted sleep.
•
Keep Your Routine Consistent: Following the same steps each night, including things like putting on your pajamas and brushing your teeth, can reinforce in your mind that it’s bedtime. In addition, aim to be asleep and make wake times consistent.
•
Budget 30 Minutes For Winding Down: Take advantage of whatever puts you in a state of calm such as soft music, light stretching, reading, and/or relaxation exercises. Based on traditional Chinese medicine, the best time to be asleep by is 11pm, so start your sleep hygiene/winding down by 10:30pm latest!!
•
Dim Your Lights: Try to keep away from bright lights because they can hinder the production of melatonin, a hormone that the body creates to facilitate sleep.
•
Unplug From Electronics: Build in a 30-60 minute pre-bed buffer time that is device-free. Cell phones, tablets, and laptops cause mental stimulation that is hard to shut off and also generate blue light that may decrease melatonin production.
•
Test Methods of Relaxation: Instead of making falling asleep your goal, it’s often easier to focus on relaxation. Meditation, mindfulness, paced breathing, and other relaxation techniques can put you in the right mindset for bed.
•
All in all, you want to maximize your bedroom environment, to maximize your sleep - I personally love the use of calming scents, such as lavender, which may induce a calmer state of mind and help cultivate a positive space for sleep. Give it a try!! 😴
•
•
Naturopathic medicine has great potential in the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) because it focuses on individualized care. There is no “standard” protocol for PCOS, your ND will need to discuss your symptoms and recognize your state of hormonal imbalance to develop an effective treatment plan.
•
Your naturopath may order additional laboratory testing if the underlying hormonal imbalances are not clear. Testing may include salivary, urine or blood tests, depending on which hormone is being assessed. You may be asked to keep a record of your basal body temperature (BBT), a simple means of tracking the hormonal ebb and flow of your monthly cycle.
•
The cornerstone of treatment for PCOS is improving response of the body to insulin. This often involves exercise and consuming a whole foods diet that is low in refined and processed sugars. Botanical medicines and nutritional supplements may also be used to address specific hormone imbalances to improve PCOS symptoms and its underlining causes.
•
PCOS affects up to 1 in 10 women. This “silent disorder” is one of the most common hormonal disorders in women. It’s closely associated with infertility and can create a heavy emotional burden on those who suffer with it. Each woman manifests the hormonal imbalances and symptoms of PCOS differently. It is only through understanding the underlying imbalances unique to each woman can we hope to overcome PCOS and achieve balanced, vibrant health.
