After watching the Netflix movie, True Spirit,” we have been thinking a lot about how life can give us many “knockdowns,” but how developing qualities such as courage, endurance, determination and resilience is so important to maintain our balance.
🌊⛵️Yes, sailing through stormy seas is already a tried-and-true analogy for life, but still worth taking a moment to meditate on. One of our favourite lines from the movie, when she gets stuck without wind for a week is: “The truth is that living your dream is hard… I’m not always fine, strong or fearless. I’m often terrified and I doubt myself, I think a lot about giving up, but that’s okay.” Well, Jessica didn’t give up and she learned so much from her experience, that she now shares with others as a motivational speaker.
☀️Whatever your “dream” is and whether you are currently reaching your big goals or still working towards smaller goals, Don’t Give Up! Yes, living your dream is hard but would you have it any other way? What lessons are you learning that you can share with others? And those of us who have many years of experience, “living the dream,” let’s not make it sound like it’s easy, because it’s not. Rather, let’s always remember what gets us through those tough times and what we might have done differently and be generous in sharing our experiences with others.

Are you under the age of 35, and interested in working as an English Language Assistant in France or many other countries from October, 2023 until April, 2024?

Now is the time to apply!

You must be completely fluent in English, have taken a CELTA or TEFL/TESOL Certification course, and have 2 years’ teaching experience. (OR have finished 2 years in an undergraduate degree, OR one year of study in a further education institution/college) and have B1 level French. (For France)

You will work between 12 hours a week (sometimes with the option to add up to six more hours) and earn about 1000$ euros a month. (Before tax)

If you do not have a French residency or EU passport, once you are invited, you will apply for a “Long Stay” visa.

There are about 500 posts available just in France alone, application is now open, and you can choose from 3 different regions, including “Outre-Mer” Overseas France - such as French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, Réunion, etc. 🌊🏖️How cool would that be??

If you choose France, “Outre-Mer” your salary will be approximately 40% higher, as the cost of living is higher than mainland France.

For more info, please go to www.britishcouncil.org and look at their study/work abroad pages. Or go to www.france-education-international.fr

Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada

Hey, is this the right pronunciation??

Remember all those phrase books we used to buy when we would go on holidays to faraway places? Did you end up using them or did they get forgotten in the bottom of your backpack?

Well, if you are a language tutor, why not help your students make their own “phrase books?”

📚 🖊 We highly recommend that you encourage your students to have an old-school notebook or a note-taking app on their mobile device where they can jot down all the useful phrases and expressions that you will teach them.

👉🏻Always strive to tailor these phrases to the specific needs of your students.

🗣If you are teaching yourself a language, you will definitely want to make your own “phrase book,” and have it handy at all times.

Feel free to write out words how they sound to you in your mother tongue, and in any characters or alphabet that you prefer. If you are learning a language with a different alphabet than your own, then it will help you to remember how to pronounce foreign looking words. Of course, your ultimate goal is to learn how to read and pronounce the characters of the new alphabet you are learning, but until then you will need a little assistance. ☺️

What do you do to help your students pronounce difficult words?

Hey, 👋 We recently moved abroad ourselves, and we know how hard it can be to make that dream a reality!

🚀 I kept thinking how it felt like we needed “rocket fuel” to achieve “lift off!” Just going through all our stuff, 📦 selling everything and getting packed up to go was a gargantuan task. 🧳

But, now that we are here in our new place, - we are SO glad that we made a decision, set a date and worked hard to achieve the goal.

So, we would love to hear all about what goals and dreams you are working towards and how we can help.

✍️ We want to make our posts as valuable as possible, so please drop us a comment below to let us know what kind of information and motivation you are looking for.

All the best with your plans! ✈️

Can you spot the mistake?
Sometimes, when traveling - you see funny English bloopers. I just had to get a picture of this one. 🧠 🐟😂
But, it actually got me thinking - sardines are full of Omega- 3 right which is good for the brain!!
Also- I see a job opportunity here- maybe as English tutors we can create work opportunities for ourselves helping websites, restaurants and others to edit their English text?
Anyone out there working as an English editor? We’d love to hear all about it, drop us a comment.

🏎 One of Formula 1’s closest-ever races, and the smallest winning margin ever.

So many factors led to Peter Gethin’s victory that day, and there are some great articles about it online.

But it got us thinking about how, seemingly small things can make such a big difference.

This lesson applies to many areas of life, and definitely applies to the difference between being a good teacher and an excellent one.

For example, in our courses, we always talk about how important it is to smile when teaching a language class. Small detail? Yes, - but it can make the difference between your students signing up for more classes, or going elsewhere.

We also talk a lot about using a wide variety of teaching methods, not falling into a rut of only using two or three teaching methods. Again, this might seem obvious but it is a detail that is often overlooked.

Just like Peter Gethin’s victory that day was only by 1% of 1 second, but was due to many different factors - let’s never forget that giving attention to seemingly small details can produce GREAT results!

❓What small details have you found that make a big difference in the quality of your classes and the happiness of your students? 🤔

If you are interested in expanding your repertoire of language teaching methods, or if you would like to get a TESOL/TEFL Certification - join us at one of our upcoming 5 day courses.

🏎 See our website for all upcoming course dates. Our upcoming courses will be taught on British Summer Time, Eastern Daylight Time and Greenwich Mean Time.

If you have ever taken our 5 Day TESOL Certification Course and would like to join us next week for a “Refresher,” (July 25-29; 8 am - 4:30 pm; British Summer Time), please DM us in the next 24 hours and you will receive a special coupon code to join the class for only $75.00 Canadian!

Why attend again? Even if we are well trained, after time passes, we can start to fall into a rut and just use two or three of our favourite teaching methods - when we could be using more than 30!

Keep your teaching “toolbox” fresh and lively by attending the course again and seeing which methods you could use more fully! It’s time to spice up your classes!

Also - we are always updating the teaching techniques and new modules have been added. 😀

For those whom have not attended before, but would still like sign up for the class - there is still time to register and take advantage of our summer offers: $100.00 discount each if you sign up with a friend, or $75.00 discount if you are attending by yourself.

It’s not too late to join our July class!

Am I right? Most times when I get a breakfast at an airport,(especially if I just got off a long haul flight and am connecting to another one…) It makes me feel like I just ate cement, not to mention the prices! So, the last time we flew, I grabbed one of those pre-packaged salads, a
large Evian and an espresso. The salad hit all the right food groups for me. It had a boiled egg on it, some tomatoes, olives and fresh greens. You know what? I loved it! Who needs greasy hash browns, mystery bacon or stodgy muffins??
Let’s re-invent airport breakfasts!!

By the way, in Lyon we so enjoyed Salade Lyonnaise which is basically a salad with crumbled bacon and a poached egg on top with a dijon dressing - simply amazing! This was my inspiration. Someone has to introduce these salads to the low carb crowds in North America - it hits all the right spots. Salad for bunch - YES!!!

Have you come up with any “dynamite” ideas recently? If not, that’s okay! Sometimes it takes a lot of experimentation until we get it right. But don’t give up. Hang in there - You’ve got this.
p.s. Does anyone else think it’s ironic that the inventor of dynamite is also the founder of the Nobel Peace Prize? 🤔

After visiting 60 different countries, we have found it is always best to book directly with airlines. Sometimes what looks like a really cheap flight is actually a combination of different airlines which are not affiliated- and can have very long stopovers. This can add a lot of hidden expenses to your trip such as getting from one airport to another in the same city (many budget airlines do not fly into the main airport hubs, rather the use smaller airports located outside of the city and can be harder to get to.) Also, the price of transit visas. In addition, if you are combining flights from different airlines who are not flight sharing, if one flight is delayed - they will not help you reschedule the connecting flight which you missed. There can also be confusion over how far your luggage will be tagged to go, and you may have to collect it, take it through customs and then check in again. For these reasons and many more, we always try to book directly with the airline. ✈️

What have you found works best for you?

Happy Travels!
