Sew Sarah Saxon
I like to sew little craft projects so I created this page as a place to keep them together and make them easy to find and share.
Sneak Peek π
Time for Talula to have some kind of undergarment. I hadn't made underwear or diaper when I made her, just tights against her skin, so always felt like she was unfinished.
Quick diaper project using flannel, padded broadcloth, a thin plastic bag and a cute flowered cotton. Feels nice like a cloth diaper but also has that satisfying crinkle.
Even though under layers make no difference to my dolls' appearance, and even though nobody is ever likely to see them, I still like to finish that detail so they feel proper and complete.

The project continues with a lovely little ladder shelf. π
Challenging since I couldn't just do a normal set of shelves, nooo, it had to be a ladder shelf.
The shelf I made from narrow wooden craft sticks stained with dark brown Sharpie. Once it was finished, I aged it with an emery board to give it a bit of character.
I made the plants from twist ties and tiny lids (posted previously), and the spice jars I mostly made from plastic packaging out of the recycle bin.
Exactly what project is this, you ask? Patience grasshopper...
"Then, as if by magic, she turned lentils to stone." π
The project continues...
Haven't posted for a while but none of the projects I'm working on involve sewing... so I'm going to start using this page for all the different things I make.
To that end, I present to you my hand-made group of miniature house plants.
The larger project they belong to will remain under wraps for now...
This project didn't actually involve sewing but I reserve the right to craft as I see fit. π
I got a tiny deck of cards in a little glass bottle which was super cute but difficult to extract the cards. I decided I needed to make them a tiny tuck box. I also acquired, around the same time, a pair of miniature decks of the same size as the ones in the bottle. I made my own version of a tuck box and also used the pattern from the boxed pair to make a couple boxes for the deck in the bottle.
Once I had my little boxed decks done they were so small they seemed lost in the box with the regular sized decks so obviously then I needed to make a little box to put them in.
For the box I used purple and black cardstock, grey and red felt, a piece of black lace, a black bug broach and four little bells. The broach can be removed. I used bells for feet as a "security feature" so if anyone picks it up you'll hear it. π
Sneak peek...
Quickie in the middle of other projects...
With Covid restrictions lifting, I've been going into the office one day a week. I enjoy the walk to and from work but carrying a heavy laptop bag and a backpack is a bit much especially in the heat. I wanted something more than just a heavy, noisy rolling laptop bag; I wanted to get out from under the backpack too, so something that would fit my purse, lunch, umbrella, etc.
Found the solution in this duffel-sized dolly thingy at Save-On-Foods for $15; lightweight with quiet wheels and enough capacity for everything.
Perfect... but... could hardly stand looking at it... so I dove into my remnant bin and used embroidery thread to hand stitch a new cover with bias tape trim. I underestimated how long it would take to stitch... hours... but worth it... and even though my stitching is crooked (pretty atrocious on the underside lol), it's a huge improvement I have to say. πβοΈπ§΅πͺ‘
The Making Of: Lacey π
Lacey is my smallest doll so far (not including De'Yonna because she's a cat).
Lacey's wearing two kinds of eyelet lace; one for her bonnet and sundress and the other for her poncho. Her sundress is simply made with a tiny piece of lace and two bits of narrow bias tape. Her bonnet is made by folding a tiny piece of lace in half. Her poncho is made from two tips cut from wider eyelet lace.
Everything made by me including the miniature safety pins to fasten her cloth diaper.
It's a challenge to work with such small parts but worth it in the end for the cuteness. π₯°

My smallest project yet!
The last photo is just so you can see one of the two miniature safety pins I made for her cloth diaper. π
Sakura Sunrise gets a proper display case! πΈπ₯°
When I was working on Sakura, I kept all the bits together in a clear plastic Ferrero Rocher box. When she was finished I put her back in the box to keep her clean and safe, but it seemed wrong to make something so pretty live in a piece of recycling. I decided the empty chocolate box wasn't good enough anymore; she deserved a proper case.
I printed a Japanese scene for the background and cut a sheet of cardstock to put behind it. Sakura is attached to the cardstock with a bobby pin so she can be easily removed if needed. Then I printed and carefully cut out some blossom branches and a copy of the bridge with lanterns. I used a small round metal tool and pressed the petals into my finger one by one to make them a bit softer and rounder (instead of flat and straight) to help them look a little more realistic. I glued the pieces in tiny strategic spots to the underside of the clear lid to give the display a 3D appearance. At some point De'Yonna climbed in there... cats just can't resist a good box. I didn't make the cat for the display but she seems to match the scene and it's nice for Sakura to have a companion. π₯°πββ¬
Sealed with a strip of tape around the edges and p**f, discarded chocolate box becomes a beautiful Japanese scene in 3D for my pretty Sakura Sunrise. Everything hand-made from scratch by... me.

Six years ago today! Loved this bag and used it until the straps gave up, which I knew they would, since they were just vinyl. It's a big bag that can hold lots of stuff and I used to get compliments on it.... should get a proper replacement strap and start using it again. π€β π€

Made a shoulder bag this weekend using remnants from other projects. I wasn't sure what I was going to do when I got started, but I think it turned out pretty good! The bag is mostly made from vinyl and two squares left over from hemming a set of black curtains. Inside it has a large central area, a medium pocket at the front and four smaller pockets at the back. I decorated it with applique patches that I made from a piece of fabric called "The Human Body" with glow in the dark bones!!
Wanted a quick little project and set out to make a tiny bear but ended up with an unimpressed cat.
De'Yonna the Disillusioned
Red Cat of the Apocalypse
Scratcher of All Things
Cuddler of None.. and she is not amused.

Just finished making her and she's already pi**ed off at me. π

I am so pleased to introduce;
Sakura Sunrise
The Greatest Warrior of Kenjutsu Since Time Unknown
In her home country, Japan, she is called Hinode, Sakura.
Her given name, Sakura, means Cherry Blossom and her surname, Hinode, means Sunrise; so in English her name would be "Cherry Blossom Sunrise". She is known most commonly by a combination of these, as Sakura Sunrise, at least to those few that know her. In homage to her name, you may notice the matching cherry blossoms on her hair adornments and scabbard.
Neither names were given by her family, for she was found as a nameless orphan and was soon sold into slavery. She was only able to escape the bonds and misery of slavery and ascend to the skilled warrior she is today by unyielding determination, formidable cunning and a startling aptitude for martial arts. Those that have had chance to know her on her travels throughout Japan would fondly recall her cute, quirky, confusing sense of humor.
At first, her name was given to her because she was a tiny pink baby found under a cherry tree, resplendent in springtime blossoms glowing in the gentle light of the early sunrise. She disputes it, but the name also became relevant in adulthood due to her fondness for cherries soaked in Sake; her cheeks blush pink when she often gets drunk on her special blend of 'haunted nectar' as she calls it.
Although she was found at sunrise as a baby, she was also honoured to be given the name Sunrise by the Samurai for her incredible skills in Kenjutsu (the art of fighting and killing with a sword), for when she has defeated her opponents, and they gaze up at her from their backs, the last thing they see is the red Japanese sun rising above them (on her costume), as she closes in for the final death-blow.
I present to you, tiny Sakura Sunrise, sweet as cherry pie, easy to underestimate, ready to get drunk on haunted nectar and defeat her opponents with a strange mastery in Kenjutsu not seen in many lifetimes... we are certain her story does not end here.

Sakura Sunrise is a Waldorf style 9 cm doll with katana (sword), koshirae (scabbard) and kogai (hair adornments that match the sword and scabbard) as well as traditional Japanese geta (sandals). Under her clothes is a full body stocking made of white lace, visible only on her legs. Her mini skirt, top and waist-cincher combination is inspired by traditional Japanese clothing and the flag of Japan.
