Sometimes a single tooth is all we need to change to transform a smile. This patient had been unsatisfied with the filling on her front tooth- it wasn’t bad, but there was definitely some room for improvement. The filling was placed after a cycling accident as a teenager, and we both agreed that it was time for a change.

By using composite bonding, we were able to change out this filling for one that matched the natural teeth in colour, improve the shape so it was more harmonious with the other teeth, and made her smile look so much better! We're really happy with this gum grafting result! Gum recession can be caused by a number of factors: genetics, history of braces and aggressive brushing are some of the more well known causes. The treatment depends on the severity of gum loss, the cause of the gum loss, and whether damage has occurred to the roots that are exposed.

Modern grafting techniques are much less painful than the traditional methods. This lovely patient had experienced the discomfort of an old school graft on the other side, so understandably was reluctant to get the other side done. After discussing the new techniques and materials (not harvesting from the roof of the mouth) we went ahead, and the results speak for themselves! The patient was exceptional with post op care, so we're all stoked with these results!

The old metal fillings last a long time, however when they fail, they tend to damage the tooth supporting them. When this happens it's unpredictable: sometimes the amount of tooth that fractures off is relatively small, and above the gum line, so we can repair the tooth with a filling.

Sometimes if the amount of tooth that fractures is large, we can still save the tooth but we need to put a crown on it, to reinforce the tooth.

Sometimes, sadly, the tooth can fracture in a way that can't be salvaged (often breaking vertically like an axe in a log), and the tooth must be removed and replaced.
