I love my dancing girly wurlys SO much ❤ Sad that my Victoria West Community Association class has finished for the holidays because we've had so much fun and laughter.

One more week for the Bashirah Middle Eastern Dance Company studio classes before Christmas break.

I am looking forward to the rest but sad that I won't see them for several weeks 😕

Belly dance teachers and students should read this!

‼️ If your teacher is preventing you from going to study with other teachers then they are NOT a good teacher.

Here’s the thing. We don’t own people. We can’t control their free will. Our students & clients are independent agents able to use their time & money as they see fit.

Gatekeeping students from attending other classes or events is a TERRIBLE thing to do.

Why?
First off you are restricting their freedom of movement which makes you look crazy & controlling. It’s also limiting their growth & opportunities to grow which might suit you fine bc you keep them in your pocket but then you are not keeping their best interests at hand, which as a teacher, should be your priority.

You are holding these people back from creating their own community & connections. This is removing chances for them to explore opportunities, grow and learn from others. As teachers we hold alot of keys for growth. But we DONT HOLD THEM ALL.

If you are worried that your students will like someone better than you so holding them back from possibly discovering that - you need to deal with your insecurities. There will ALWAYS be someone better or offering something more suited to others. But turn this around - you are also offering something different than others. SO WHY BE WORRIED? Sometimes students run their course with you & that’s ok! It will happen eventually regardless.

Loyalty is built out of trust, transparency & ethics. If you are holding your students back from experiences you should reevaluate your stance as an instructor.

This is another hill I’m going to die on bc I’ve been restricted by dance teachers in the past & I know many others who have too. As a teacher myself I have to constantly be aware that people are coming to me bc they like & want something from me. My service is to them. Part of this is fostering their next steps which is in things like trying out Jane Doe’s class, trying this workshop or attending so&so’s hafla. The very thing they brought them into my front door is something I should want to continue to cultivate. And I can’t offer it all.

Don’t hold your students back. Don’t be that person who is preventing growth.
