Pender Harbour Anchorages. Pender Harbour is a natural stopover for boats heading north or south in the Strait of Georgia. For northbound boats, it’s just the right distance for a day’s run from Nanaimo, Silva Bay or Howe Sound. For boats southbound from Desolation Sound, it’s a good place to prepare for the long, exposed legs across the Strait of Georgia or down the Sunshine Coast. Boats bound to or from Princess Louisa Inlet often use Pender Harbour for both going and coming

Pender Harbour has good marinas, good anchorages, good eating, and good shopping. It has fuel and a haulout and repair facility. Diving services are available through West Dock Divers. The harbour is nestled against steep mountains; the scenery is beautiful. It’s a good place for walking and hiking. If you carry trail bikes, the Madeira Park Public Wharf has a map of the nearby Suncoaster Trail, built and maintained by volunteers.

Pender Harbour is not a single large bay. It is a complex of coves, each with its own personality. Most cruisers will go down the north side. At the back, Hospital Bay and Garden Bay have marinas, fuel, shopping, and dining. The best anchorage is in Garden Bay. John Henry’s Resort & Marina is the only place for fuel in Pender Harbour. Madeira Park, in the southeast corner of Pender Harbour, has moorage, haulout and repairs. A shopping center is a short walk from the Madeira Park dock.

Pender Harbour has several drying and underwater rocks throughout, but most of them are marked. With Chart 3535 (or good electronic charts), and a little care, you should have no problems.

For more information visit our partner site Waggoner Cruising Guide.

Horton Bay.

The public wharf is a Canpass/Nexus-only customs reporting station and has room for up to 320 feet of moorage. Entering the area between Mayne and Samuel Islands requires some care but is completely navigable.

From the Gulf Islands side, the best route is through Georgeson Passage, east of Lizard Island. Be careful of a kelp-covered rock in less than 6 feet, fairly close to Mayne Island. If entering west of Lizard Island, the rock is in the middle of your path into Horton Bay. A reef extends from Curlew Island into Robson Passage, which separates Curlew Island from Mayne Island. use Plans Chart 3477 (large scale, much recommended) or 3442. A study of Chart 3477 shows a mid-channel course is called for. The bay is filled with crab pots and private mooring buoys in the best part of the bay. We have received reports of current running through the bay.

Our 5 Star Reviews:

I spent from September 2021 to April 2022 here. Absolutely stellar! Wharves are wonderful and the hydraulic front ramp helps on those low-tide days. The staff are amazing! Helpful and friendly and keep the place beautiful! Great place for long or short-term moorage! And the views and wildlife are added bonus for free! Patricia Garland

Best yacht marina with all the amenities you will find. I’ve been at marinas from “here to there” and this is the best with power, parking, and amenities including local bars/restaurants with a crew lounge to boot. Steve and Greg and the rest of the staff will take care of all your needs. James Ferguson
