Let’s talk the Rainbow Pride Flag 🏳️‍🌈

This iconic flag has changed a lot since its creation! While we're showing the most common/more recent versions, there are many variations and each has an important place in this flag’s history. Please note, this information is very condensed!

🏳️‍🌈 Gilbert Baker Pride Flag
Gilbert Baker designed the original pride flag with a committee of other artists and activists. The flags were flown at the Gay Freedom Day Parade in San Francisco on June 25, 1978.

🏳️‍🌈 1978 - 1979 Pride Flag
Due to the increase in demand after Harvey Milk’s assassination, the 7-stripe version became more popular and easier to manufacture. The hot pink fabric used in the original design was not as accessible as the other colours and was dropped.

🏳️‍🌈 Traditional Pride Flag
In 1979, to decorate lamp posts along the parade route, Baker split the flag evenly. By dropping the turquoise and indigo stripes and adding a blue one, this iconic 6-stripe flag was used for years and became the standard symbol for the q***r community.

🏳️‍🌈 Philadelphia Pride Flag
Noting that q***r POC are often overlooked in q***r movements, the city of Philadelphia commissioned a more inclusive flag in 2017. The goal was to create a flag to recognize the community, draw attention to the issues they face inside and outside of the q***r community, and to acknowledge their important past and continuing contributions to the q***r movements.

🏳️‍🌈 Progress Pride Flag
Daniel Quasar added a chevron to the hoist of the traditional flag made of white, pink, blue, brown, and black stripes in 2018. These stripes represent marginalized POC within the community, trans & nonbinary people, and those living with HIV/AIDs as well as those who we have lost.

🏳️‍🌈 Intersex Inclusion Pride Flag
Created in 2021 by Valentino Vecchietti, the Intersex Inclusion Pride Flag is a redesign of the Progress Pride Flag that includes the Intersex Flag. While not all Intersex people identify with falling under the q***r umbrella, they often experience the same harmful experiences that come from gender norms and stereotypes within society, and have been underrepresented in the q***r community.

Plain does not have to equal boring! If you're not into all things sparkly, you can still make a statement with a plain piece of body jewellery! Focus on shape, texture, and size ✨

Back at it again with some more body jewelry education! 🎓 All about threading!

✨Externally Threaded: Threading is on the outside of the jewellery. Matching tops, such as beads or spikes, have holes that will screw onto the jewellery bar/post. Make sure that the opening in the tops are the same gauge as the bar they are being screwed onto. While this type of threading is safe, it is good to be aware that due to the threads going through the piercing, micro-tears can occur in new or sensitive piercings.

✨Internally Threaded: Threading is on the inside of the jewellery. Matching tops have threaded pieces that stick out and will screw into the bar/post. This style is often used by professionals to pierce with as the smooth bar will not cause damage to a new piercing. Sensitive piercings and freshly stretched ears also benefit from this style to prevent micro-tears!

✨Threadless: This jewellery does not use threads to attach at top. The bar/post has a hole that a top with a stem is inserted into. The stems often arrive from the manufacturer straight and must be gently bent. Once placed inside the jewellery, the bent stem will apply pressure which keeps it from falling out. Feeling a slight grinding or pop as the stem fits into the bar is normal and expected! To remove, secure the base and twist the top back and forth to straighten the stem.

Between the gauge, length, diameter, and style, it can be hard to keep track of what size body jewellery you wear! This is a simple guide on how to measure some of the more common pieces. Keep those piercings happy! ❤

✨Gauge: This refers to the thickness of the jewellery and can be confusing because a smaller mm measurement = a larger gauge size. (12G jewellery is thinner than 8G jewellery, for example.)

✨Internal Diameter: Hoops are measured by the internal diameter at the widest points instead of the external! The diameter is useful as it will tell you how much space there will be for your piercing. Finding a comfortable size that is neither too loose nor too tight will help in keeping a piercing healthy!

✨Length: This is the length of jewellery that goes through your piercing, often a barbell or post. Measure the part that is intended to sit in your piercing. For externally threaded jewellery, you want to measure between where the threading begins and not the threading itself as that is where a bead would sit.

✨Bead Size: Although it can play a role in ensuring your jewellery sits comfortably, it is good to know your preferred bead size for personal preferences, too! A smaller bead often has a softer, more delicate appearance whereas a larger bead stands out more and can have a bolder look.

REMEMBER: Jewellery for new piercings are often larger to accommodate the healing process! The size you are pierced with will likely not be the size that will fit you once your piercing is healed!
