Fawn Lily Community Foods

Intoduction

Fawn Lily Community Foods is small scale artisan bakery that provides sourdough loaves, snacks and seed based crackers on sliding scale pricing system that ranges from the cost of ingredients upwards, with no one turned away for lack of funds.

How the Sliding Scale Pricing System Works

For each product available there are two listed prices, which reflect the upper and lower ends of the pricing scale for that product. The lower price represents the approximate cost of ingredients used to make the product (the COG). The upper end of the scale represents a price that would cover the difference between the lower end of the scale and the market value for the product. The hope is that folks will pay an amount that reflects their own financial situation. Paying an amount on the higher side of the scale will help make it possible for this business to continue to operate and for others to be able to access the products at a rate they are able to afford. I also accept direct trade in the form of food, art, other products, skills or anything else you would like to exchange for bread or crackers.

Where to find products

Products from Fawn Lily Community Foods will be available at the James Bay Community Markets on Saturday from 9-3, May to September. Starting in August products will also be available through a bicycle delivery service. In doing this I hope to be able to make products more accessible for folks who may not be able to make it to the market for any reason. I also hope in this way to be able to continue the operations of Fawn Lily Community Foods past the end of the market season. More information on the delivery service will be posted closer to August.

Acknowledgment of territories

I would like to acknowledge that Fawn Lily Community Foods operates on the unseeded, surrendered and stolen lands of the Lekwungen and WSANEC peoples, represented today by the Songhees and Esquimalt nations. As a white settler I also recognize that I have primarily benefited from the systems which are causing the ongoing cultural genocide that is colonialism. More specifically I would like to acknowledge that the ways in which I have benefited from these systems are what has lead me to be in a significant enough position of privilege to be able to launch this business. In line with with understanding I am trying to distance myself from traditional ideas of ownership over this business. Some of the steps I am taking to do this are to prioritize remaining as transparent as possible and donating any profits (after labor and operations expenses have been payed) to community organizations and initiatives. I also recognize that I am only beginning a long journey of learning and unlearning, and as such I know I will be making mistakes. I strive to hold myself accountable for the mistakes that I make and the harm that I may cause to others. Should anyone recognize ways that I am causing harm and feel comfortable telling me, I would be incredibly grateful for this.
