21st Century Pain Solutions 09/30/2020

I was featured on a podcast recently! Dr. Wayne Phimister from Vancouver had me on his podcast "21st Century Pain Solutions" and it was a blast. If you've ever been curious about what I do as a naturopathic doctor, take a listen here. My practice is primarily treating chronic pain and sports injuries (though I'm always keen on getting my patients to eat more plants and generally be healthier), and I've been spending lots of time in the past year learning more about prolotherapy, PRP and regenerative injections from one of the best in the business, Dr. Tyna Moore. Have a listen on spotify, itunes or wherever you listen to pods. If you have any questions let me know!

Hi everyone! Take a listen to my thoughts on stress and stress eating during this time. (spoiler alert- I go for the S and V chips)

ALSO. I'm kickstarting a new nutrition program next week and I'm looking for people to join. This is a free 2 week whole-food, plant-based program that provides you with a customized meal plan including all recipes, shopping lists and online support with me. If there is anyone living in the states that wants to participate, it even has grocery delivery!

We're going to kick it off on Wednesday next week (April 29th), so get back to me ASAP.

If you're interested or think you know someone that would be, please share this with them. Plant-based nutrition has changed my life and I'm excited to start sharing this with more people.

All set for a day of virtual consults! It feels great to be in the office and able to help people, even if it isn't in person.
This is a great time to be focusing on your health. Digestion, nutrition, hormone optimization, stress reduction, sleep quality and at home pain management are all areas I've been helping people with during this time.
If you're in BC and want to make your health a priority, shoot me a message and we can set up an appointment. I do free 15 minute discovery sessions right now so you can get a better idea of what naturopathic medicine is and if we're a good fit.

If you have any questions about what foods are right to focus on during this time, shoot me a message.
Additionally, I have started seeing patients virtually and am accepting new patients (only for those in BC).
If you're one of those people that wants to use this time to turn your health around and focus on your digestion, nutrition optimization, hormones or any other health goals then let's do it.

I hopped on to facebook live this morning to have a chat with our Backfit community about the most important things they can do to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus.... spoiler alert: STAY HOME!

Social distancing is the most effective tool there is right now. There is nothing shown to treat, prevent or cure contracting the Covid-19 virus, so your best course of action is to decrease the chance of coming into contact with it.

I've been lucky to have great phone calls with friends, time spent outdoors, online cribbage and great books to dive into.

There are definitely some other things worth considering while we're spending this time alone, so have a watch to learn what else I think is a good idea.

Much love to you all! Stay home and stay healthy.

03/20/2020

This page hasn't seen any action in a long time, but with everything going on right now, the Backfit team and myself wanted to start sharing some information and help for people to stay healthy through their isolation periods.

We're going to be hopping on facebook live every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The plan is to do Mindfit Mondays, Nutrafit Wednesdays (hosted by me) and Spinefit/Getfit Fridays. I'll be sharing the videos on my page, but if you want to follow along live and ask questions head over to the Backfit Clinic page to stay informed.

If there are any questions you have, or topics you want covered, fire me a message here or drop us a line on our page.

Much love to you all. Hope you're staying healthy through all of this.

The Secret (but Healthy!) Diet Powering Kyrie and the NBA 11/15/2017

From Joe Average looking to decrease blood pressure, to Kyrie Irving (one of the best players in the NBA), people are switching to a plant-based diet for numerous reasons.

Give this one a read.

One interesting aside from this: "According to research firm GlobalData's report, 6 percent of U.S. consumers identify as vegan, up from just 1 percent in 2014. In the United Kingdom, veganism rose by 350 percent from 2006 to 2016, largely from the country's younger demographics."

There's a huge shift in people making more conscious meal decisions for themselves, the planet and the animals. This is a beautiful thing. Be a part of it, choose veg.

The Secret (but Healthy!) Diet Powering Kyrie and the NBA Chicken wings are vanishing from the locker room. Superstars are slimming down—and speeding up. If 'skinny ball' has arrived, could the performance-enhancer sparking a revolution be... veganism?

46% of Americans have high blood pressure under new guidelines 11/14/2017

Eat more plants, take processed crap out of your diet, get moving and find a way to relax. Canada isn't quite this high, but we do have about 1 in 5 adults living with high blood pressure. Yikes.

46% of Americans have high blood pressure under new guidelines High blood pressure should be treated at 130/80 rather than 140/90, according to new guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.

Acupuncture for Chronic Pain: Unprecedented Advances 10/31/2017

Naturopathic Doctors have been using and advocating acupuncture for years, it's great to see others catching up and as this article says, "I think it's fair to say that acupuncture is here to stay. It's going to be a permanent addition to our tool box."

Acupuncture works outstandingly for a variety of musculoskeletal problems as this article states, but it goes beyond that. Digestion, mental/emotional issues, immunodeficiencies and much more. Acupuncture is an integral part of an ND's practice that gets used constantly because of its wide-ranging effects.

Quiet mornings with my mat, this book, coffee and the breath has become one of my favorite things.
Whether you're a yogi or not, The Radiance Sutras is a beautiful read to start your day with.

"The tongue is made of truth and flame.
On it dance the triple fires of spirit, body, soul.
Trace this dance from the depths of your core,
Rising upward through the crown of your being.
Every offering of breath and food
Feeds this holy flame.

Touch the tip of the tongue
To the roof of the mouth, lightly.
Inquire into the luminosity above.
Breathe out with a quiet h a a a a.

You are an altar to the flame of life.
Throw yourself into the throbbing intensity.
Become this dance,
Absorbed in radiant splendor."

U of C med school beefs up nutrition and lifestyle education 10/24/2017

Gotta love seeing this- med schools are coming around to the idea of nutrition and lifestyle as a vital part of medicine. There's so much we can do with simple tools like that to help people tremendously.
Nice to see Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine get a shoutout here too. Naturopathic Doctors have been advocating this for well over a hundred years... about time lifestyle medicine finally started making its way up to the forefront.

Diet And Health: Puzzling Past Paradox To PURE Understanding 09/15/2017

Did you get caught up in the hype that a diet high in carbs is associated with a higher risk of mortality while a diet high in fat is associated with a lower risk? Or how about that after 3 servings of fruits, vegetables and legumes there is no more benefit? Lots of people did and fair enough, the PURE study sounds incredible- 12 years long, 225,000 people in 25 countries- but there are things worth mentioning about how these results were drawn and what the actual conclusions were.

David Katz, MD does an excellent job in the article I've linked to, but here are a few highlights from it:

- The headline could have been "very poor people with barely anything to eat get sick and die more often than affluent people with access to both ample diets, and hospitals." Eating more carbs does not always happen by choice. A low calorie diet that results in malnutrition is likely extremely high in carbohydrates. This does not mean that incidence of mortality is due to high carbohydrate intake.

- The study did not differentiate between carbohydrates- ie jelly beans, whole wheat bread, rice, leafy greens, and white sugar were all seen as equals.

- Lowest levels of heart disease, stroke and all mortality are seen in groups eating more fruits, vegetables and legumes but when education, health care, employment and a better socioeconomic situation are controlled for, the benefit disappears. The multivariable model the study used showed that since those things happen together most of the time- it’s no longer possible to attribute a benefit to just one of them.

Read Dr. Katz's article below to for all the details!
