Howl Brewing - Smoked Strawberry Jalapeno Saison

No one can say that Dan Van Netten at Howl Brewing, avoids experimentation. Looking at the list of over 50 releases since opening in 2018, is a testament to that. Beers like his Arboreal IPA, made with spruce tips, western hemlock needles, elderflower, old man’s beard, Chaga and bay leaves are a perfect example. For this release, we have the flavours of smoke making an appearance. Ted Child wrote a great piece for the current Growler Magazine, “Have You Seen the Smoke?,” which is a great read for those, like myself, who love the addition of smoke to certain styles.

Howl’s saison poured an amber mahogany colour with moderately light head levels and light retention. Notes of fresh strawberry fruit were predominant on the nose with a hint of smoke. The proof for this release was in the tasting, and here it really delivered for the Saison style. The blend was really perfection here. Natural tasting. No component overpowering another. A gentle smoke note worked with the strawberries beautifully, with the Jalapeno, showing the fresh flavours of the pepper, and just a slight hint of the heat. Mouthfeel was crisp and solid for the style with carbonation a touch above medium. Finish had all the flavours present and balanced well.

My tallboy was purchased at Cascadia Langford and served lightly chilled. Another fine release that won’t be long on the shelves.
