We have some news to share - with mixed emotions, we're announcing the closure of our retail store at 580 Johnson St. After more than 50 amazing years of serving up a legendary selection of footwear, we've made the tough decision to bid farewell to our physical space and transition to an online-only model starting October 2024.

With the changing times (rent increases, skyrocketing costs of running a brick and mortar, decreases in downtown foot traffic), we needed to make the tough call to adapt. We'll still be able to continue our operations locally, it'll just look a little different.

Moving forward, our online shop (as always) will be available for you to shop from the comfort of home. Additionally, our Custom Printshop will continue operating locally, offering up custom printed shoes, both for individuals and corporate customers, and plan to expand our selection of custom printed garments (t-shirts, hoodies, athletic wear, tote bags, hats and beyond). We've always offered competitive pricing and speedy turn-around times, and that will continue as we expand our focus on bigger corporate sales.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our loyal customers from Victoria and beyond, for your steadfast support over the years. Your loyalty and enthusiasm have been the driving force behind everything we do, and we are profoundly grateful for each and every one of you who've walked through our doors. To help us celebrate our over 50 years of retail business, we invite you to join us in the send-off with special in-store only closing sales and promotions over the next few months. We'll update you with more information on that in the coming weeks, be sure to follow along here.

Using artwork we curated from an archived collection of vintage botanical illustrations, we were inspired to create this Botanical Collection.

Featuring the artwork of 14 different butterflies from the Imperial Trojan to the Painted Lady. This design, the Baggins Original Hi Top Botanical Butterflies, was made using artwork from the Edinburgh Journal of Natural History and of Physical Sciences from 1835-39.

Kara Harrison is a full-time tattoo artist and illustrator, based in Nanaimo, BC but who does semi-regular guest spots at Tattoo Zoo in Victoria. Her work is often inspired by her favorite subjects; dinosaurs, and usually includes glitter and rainbows.

This piece is inspired by the classic mosquito in amber from the Jurassic Park franchise which is a recurring theme in Kara’s work.

Baggins Original Hi-tops Weird Tales: Villainous V***n is an ode to the weird and wonderful artwork from vintage Fantasy & Horror pulp fiction pioneers, Weird Tales.

The first issue was published in February of 1928, the historic publication featured stories from H. P. Lovecraft, Seabury Quinn, and Clark Ashton Smith. The publication featured artwork by incredible artists like Hannes Bok, Jon Arfstrom, Pete Kuhlhoff, Matt Fox, Margaret Brundage, and many many more. The art we chose to feature is from a handful of magazines from the 1920s through the 1950s that recently entered the public domain.

Namgis First Nations Artist, Jamin Zuroski shines again with this vibrant Butterfly design, that honours Transformation and Freedom. In Kwak’wala, the Butterfly’s name is hamumu.

Sea to Sky
Namgis First Nations Artist, Jamin Zuroski generously offers us this sharp Eagle, Salmon, and Sun design, that honours Strength and Sustainability. In Kwak’wala, the Eagle’s name is kwikw, the Salmon’s name is k̓uta̱la and the Sun’s name is t̕łisa̱la.
“The sea, land and sky satisfies and unifies us all.”

Love Live the Orca
Namgis First Nations Artist, Jamin Zuroski splashes us with this playful Orca design, that honours family, loyalty, curiosity, collaboration, responsibility and playfulness. In Kwak’wala, the Orca’s name is max’inux.

Happy Birthday to us!!

We're 53, can you believe it? We'd love to hear some of your favourite Baggins stories. We'll kick things off:

In 1969, black light posters were all the rage. The only issue? You couldn't find black lights anywhere in Victoria. One savvy 19-year-old Glen Lynch saw an opportunity and decided to open his own shop. He landed on calling it Baggins, after a particular classic fantasy character with famous feet.

Next, he needed a storefront. An open space was available on the second floor of Market Square - rent was $25 a month if Glen agreed to sweep the front steps. Ah, how times have changed since those good old days.

Baggins started out by selling black lights, trippy artwork, imported clothing, and headshop gear. Somewhere in the early '90s, we began transitioning to footwear, and slowly, we became the Baggins Shoes of today.

Do you remember our old location in Market Square? Maybe you know us from the Bastion Square days.. or down the Paper Box arcade alley? Did you meet Fraidy, our beloved shop cat? Maybe you're new to us and know our current shop at 580 Johnson Street. The history is long and if you ever run into Glen, he'll be sure to bend your ear with some legendary tales.

We have so many fond memories, have had so many incredible Alumni, and countless friendly faces have passed through our doors. We'd love to hear your stories, too!
