Coalition of Muslim Women calls for action from school board
https://www.therecord.com/news/waterloo-region/2021/11/16/coalition-of-muslim-women-calls-for-action-from-school-board.html
WATERLOO REGION — The Coalition of Muslim Women of Kitchener-Waterloo met with the Waterloo Region District School Board to discuss the case of a teacher charged with assault following allegations she restrained two students with tape.
The coalition called on the board at Monday’s meeting for action to address the recent case at Alpine Public School in Kitchener and to prevent something similar from happening in its classrooms again.
In a release following the meeting, the coalition said board staff were “very attentive to the concerns and feedback communicated to them. They committed to discuss these recommendations further.”
This meeting followed one the coalition had last week with about 30 BIPOC parents from the school to document their concerns and calls to action. Multiple complaints came through the coalition’s online hate reporting system about the case when it was reported in the media.
Based on feedback from the community, the coalition had an extensive discussion with the school board on the following six recommendations:
The immediate need for town hall/forum with the parent community who have been affected and to provide information and address their questions
Prioritizing children’s safety in schools
Supports for the children who were at risk of direct victimization and/or had witnessed or heard about the alleged acts of violence against their peers.
To not refer to this event as an ‘incident’ but as an ‘act’ that was deliberate and not accidental
The need for parent-student centred communication that happens in a timely manner, in easy-to-understand language, and that ensures parents with language or technology barriers are not left out
Strategizing on next steps to prevent such acts from recurring in the future.
