PUBLIC EVENT: THIS SATURDAY, 2 PM TO 5 PM, 320 ROYAL AVENUE, KELOWNA
TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATOR - GOING GREEN FOR LESS –
OKANAGAN VALLEY’S 1ST NET ZERO CARRIAGE HOUSE
HOST: PROFESSOR GORD LOVEGROVE, OWNER/BUILDER
All are welcome to attend this free event. Tours will be given by its designer and builder, Dr Gord Lovegrove, Professor of Sustainable Engineering at UBCO’s School of Engineering. The purpose of this event is threefold:
• To experience Net Zero / Step Code building technology;
• To inform how simple, easy, and affordable Net Zero / Step Code building technology is; and
• To de-mystify what it would be like to live in a Net Zero / Step Code home
“We are in a climate crisis and not enough is being done at the local level about it. Karen and I decided to lead by example and ‘be the change we want to see in the world’. It was surprisingly affordable to build, and, most importantly, our marriage survived the usual chaos that comes with building in your own back yard!” says Dr Gord Lovegrove.
Karen and Gord live in their new Net Zero Carriage House, and had so many folks walking buy asking questions as they built it that he promised to host an open house when it was finished, in 2020. Unfortunately, Covid hit and put those plans ‘on ice’. Now he wants to follow through on his promise and host not just his neighbors, but everyone who’s thinking of building and/or retrofitting their homes to be more energy efficient.
Dr Lovegrove has also invited his energy and engineering consultants, as well as many of his sub-trades, to be on hand and answer questions. “This was a team effort, and we could not have achieved NRCan certification without a lot of help, advice, and encouragement.” While the full list will be available on site, those of note include: Nick Watson (energy audit), Dr Craig Hostland (building envelope), Andrew Woodward (structural), Shane Baxter (CAD design/building permit), James Summer-Gill (construction assistant), Barry Milner (solar), FoxBlock (ICF), PumpPro (pumper), KRM (concrete), Fastforms (footings), Bercum (advisers), ASA (HVAC), Entec (smart electrical), Calibre (foundation), and City planners, permits, and inspection staff who made this 1st-of-its-kind (in Kelowna) journey with them.
