The ICARD 2024 Closing Keynote & Panel offered a review of the technical presentations.

Julie Champagne, National Research Council Canada and Chair of the Biological Aspects Stream, summarized how the cost of genomics has dropped dramatically and with it the possibility to better understand the life systems at play at mines and legacy sites.

Julie managed to sum up the conference perfectly, "The future is now."

Water Management and Treatment Topic Chair, Maggie MacKay, P.Eng., a native Nova Scotian, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to bring the international expertise of to her home province, where there are many legacy and acid rock drainage issues.

The final technical sessions of ICARD broke down the advancements and challenges in acid rock drainage and sustainable mining practices.

This year's conference saw the second highest attendance with over 450 delegates. As comes to a close, we look forward to the next edition in the US in 2027.

Helen Harper, Director, Closure and Reclamation, Glencore added that among the risks are forest fires, caused by climate change, which now threaten the infrastructure at legacy sites.
