The Magnificent 7: Think the run is over? Think again...
The “Magnificent 7” refers to a group of leading tech companies — including Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet (Google), Meta (Facebook), Tesla, and Nvidia — that have shown exceptional growth and market performance. While there may have been doubts that the run would continue after the massive returns over the last decade, here are several reasons why we believe these companies will continue to perform strongly into the next decade.

What’s the difference between a SEGREGATED and MUTUAL funds investment?
Segregated funds are a combined investment and life insurance product available in Canada. On the other hand, mutual funds are purely investments that you can hold inside or outside your RRSP or TFSA.
What are segregated funds
Segregated funds (also known as seg funds) are both an investment and life insurance product. They are offered by Canadian life insurance companies, some financial institutions and some mutual fund firms.
Why are they called segregated funds? These funds are “segregated” from the life insurance company itself, offering investments in stocks, bonds and other vehicles.
In addition, segregated funds can be a form of life insurance. If you designate a beneficiary of your segregated funds, this person will receive the funds immediately upon your death. The proceeds bypass the estate and are probate-tax free. However, they are subject to income tax and capital gains tax, whether they are held in a registered account (an RRSP or RIF) or a non-registered account.
What is a mutual fund?
Mutual funds allow individual investors to purchase a pool of investments that can hold stocks, bonds and other investments.
As per Seg funds, There are no fees to purchase mutual funds. However, the fund will charge a management fee of between 1 and 3 plus percent to provide professional money managers to select the investments and cover administrative costs.
What’s the difference between a segregated fund and a mutual fund?
Let’s start with the similarities. Both mutual funds and seg funds hold investments in stocks, bonds and other instruments.
There are some important differences. These will have an impact on whether mutual funds or segregated funds are the right choice for you:
Life insurance: Segregated funds are a form of life insurance – when you die, the money passes directly to your beneficiary. On the other hand, mutual funds are a simple investment. If you die, they are part of your estate and will be placed in probate. Your estate will have to pay tax on mutual fund income before the money can be disbursed to your heirs.
Guarantees: Mutual funds offer no guarantees. You can lose some or all of your investment if the fund performs poorly.
Segregated funds usually offer a guarantee that 75 to 100 percent of the principal will be returned if you hold them to the Maturity Guarantee date, which is typically 10 to 15 years or death.
Investment types: Both seg funds and mutual funds can be invested conservatively or in higher risk vehicles.
Liquidity: Both types of funds can be sold at any time.
Creditor protection: Segregated funds offer creditor protection since they are a form of life insurance. If you are facing bankruptcy, they can’t be seized provided you have named a family member as a beneficiary. Mutual funds offer no such protection.
Segregated fund taxation
Segregated funds can be held within an RRSP or TFSA, so receive the same tax protection. You only pay taxes when the money is withdrawn.
As we have indicated, the major taxation advantage of segregated funds is that they are a life insurance product. As such, your beneficiary receives the funds directly without going through probate.
In addition, for non-registered investments, unit holders are only taxed on the income they receive. Taxation is based on how long you own the segregated fund units within the income period.
There are different kinds of segregated funds offering different benefits over Mutual Funds depending on your goals.
Investment: Investing your money for long-term growth
Income: Using your investment to generate lifetime income, some offers Guaranteed Retirement Income for Life.
Estate: Upon your death, you may wish to leave funds for your beneficiaries. This fund provides a death benefit of 100 percent of the funds you have deposited and guaranteed resets or the current value, whichever is greater
Segregated funds advantages
Principal protection: Unlike mutual funds, segregated funds often offer a guaranteed return of 75 to 100 percent of your investment.
Taxation: Upon death, your heirs receive the payout directly. They avoid probate taxes but are subjected to income tax and capital gains tax.
Resets: Unlike mutual funds, Segregated funds often offers guaranteed resets to capitalized on the gains your investments generated.
Segregated funds disadvantages
Higher costs: The fees associated with segregated funds are could be higher than for mutual funds. This is to cover the low insurance cost features.
Mutual fund advantages
Lower costs: The management expense fees are normally about 1 to 3 plus percent of your holdings, which could be less than segregated funds.
Mutual fund disadvantages
Higher risk: With segregated funds, you may be guaranteed to get most of your principal back and any guaranteed resets if you hold them until the Guaranteed Maturity date or at death. On the other hand, mutual funds can drop dramatically if the stock market turns bearish or your fund’s managers make poor investment decisions.
Taxation: When you hold mutual funds in your RRSP or TFSA, your estate will face a tax hit upon your death. With segregated funds, you will avoid probate taxes – but do have to pay income tax and capital gains tax. Mutual Funds could also require yearly tax accountant calculation fees. Tax calculations are included in the Segregated fund yearly report and calculated from the purchased date and not based on the yearly return like with mutual fund.
Are segregated funds for you?
You will need to make an overall financial plan and decide whether seg funds or mutual funds (or both) are best for you.
Consider segregated funds as part of your life insurance plan. If you want to leave an estate to your heirs, some holdings in segregated funds may be worthwhile.
If you decide to purchase segregated funds, be sure to review the contract very carefully. Segregated funds can be complicated so it’s important to be aware of what you (or your beneficiaries) will receive in different situations. Mutual funds value is based on the market value at that time as they have no guarantees, therefor must simpler. With both mutual funds and segregated funds, check what fees are charged – these could have an impact on your long-term returns.
Segregated Funds vs Mutual Funds: What are the differences?
Get to know the fundamental differences and learn which product is right for you.
Segregated funds and mutual funds share some key benefits, such as:
They’re both professionally managed investment funds that pool financial contributions from investors.
Both can be invested in a variety of products including RRSPs, Non Registered, TFSA, RIF, LIRA and LIF. Some Segregated funds also offers Guaranteed Retirement Income for Life.
Generally speaking, you can redeem your investments and get current market value at any given time. But, there are also some fundamental differences:
Only life insurance companies offer “seg” funds. The name derives from the fact that funds are held separate from the general
assets of the company.
Seg funds guarantee all or most of your principal investment and guarantees resets upon maturity or death. Mutual funds generally have no guarantees at all.
Seg funds are considered an asset of the insurance company and held in trust for the investor. That means you’re protected
against the insolvency of the insurance company, something mutual funds can’t offer.
Which solution is right for you? Take a closer look at the differences.
Segregated Funds
Benefits and guarantees: Your principal investment has a maturity or death benefit guarantee of 75% or 100%, depending on the level of protection you choose. Those guarantees can be resets to capitalized on the investments gains.
Protection from market volatility: Seg funds are susceptible to market fluctuation, but your maturity and death benefit guarantees give you extra protection.
Automatic resets: Seg funds have a maturity and death benefit reset to protect your investment growth by capitalizing on the investment gains in the event of a premature death.
Estate planning: Both RRSPs and non-registered segregated funds with a named beneficiary are not subject to probate.
Creditor protection: Seg funds are life insurance contracts. In the event of a lawsuit or bankruptcy, with an appointed family member as the beneficiary, your funds may be protected from creditors. This is especially important for business owners.
Mutual Funds
Benefits and guarantees: There are no maturity or death benefit guarantees on mutual funds.
Protection from market volatility: Most mutual funds are affected by changes in the stock market. If the markets perform poorly, you could end up with a lot less than you started with.
Automatic resets: Mutual Funds don’t have a maturity or death benefit guarantee, so this isn’t an option.
Estate planning: Only RRSPs with a named beneficiary may not be subject to probate. Not always guaranteed with mutual funds.
Creditor protection: Mutual funds have no protection from creditors except in limited circumstances.

2024 Market Outlook: Macroeconomic Overview As we begin the new year, we’re reflecting on some of the key themes that impacted the markets in 2023.
Why pay more?
Buying mortgage life insurance from the bank
may be convenient, but it could cost more.
Benefits of term life insurance from Empire Life include:
• You own the policy, not your lender.
• You choose your beneficiaries and they decide how the money is used.
• Your coverage is portable. No need to re-qualify if you change lenders.
• Your coverage does not decrease with your mortgage balance.
• You can keep your coverage for as long as you need it providing the premiums are paid.

Navigating markets in 2024
From regional bank failures to unresolved geopolitical tensions to explosive growth in artificial intelligence. We have seen it all in 2023, and there are still many questions investors face as we head into the new year.
Paul Holba, SVP and CIO, Empire Life Investments Inc. breaks down some of the key themes that we expect will impact the markets in the coming year, such as potential rate cuts, unresolved geopolitical tensions and considerations when it comes to big tech and AI.
Summary:
Hello, I'm Paul Holba, Senior Vice-President and Chief Investment Officer at Empire Life Investments Inc. I want to wish you a very happy and healthy new year and take this opportunity to give you an overview of several key macro market themes we are monitoring. These include Inflation, geopolitics and tech, specifically artificial intelligence.
First, moderating inflation and the prospect of rate cuts
To tackle inflation, the U.S. Federal Reserve and Bank of Canada continued applying the brakes on the economy through interest rate hikes in 2023. Although headline inflation has been easing, core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, remains above the 2% target set by most G7 economies.
Equity markets are optimistic, pricing in a “soft landing” as economic growth remains strong, despite higher borrowing costs and stubbornly high inflation. Yet, there are still signs of a slowdown in some developed economies. Central banks began weighing the risk of causing unnecessary harm to the economy by leaving rates high as inflation falls.
However, in the last rate decisions of the year, the U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of England all held rates steady at high levels. The U.S. Federal Reserve even released projections that the Federal Funds Rate target will be 0.75 percent lower at the end of 2024 than they are today. Time and data will tell.
Next, navigating Politics & Geopolitical tensions
Politics will play a big role in 2024. We will continue to monitor several geopolitical events this year, particularly between the US and China. There are still many ongoing tensions between them that have yet to be resolved. This includes trade tariffs, a so-called “chip war” between the two countries relating to semiconductors and military confrontations over the South China Sea. Souring relations have shaken up the business community, with many companies, backed by local government grants and loans, considering plans to diversify their supply chains, ultimately shifting risk away from China.
As we find ourselves in the coldest months of winter, natural gas supplies in Europe also remain a persistent concern.
2024 also marks the start of Brazil’s membership in the OPEC+ (the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) alliance.
Finally, unpacking Big Tech and Artificial Intelligence
Big Tech mostly drove the S&P 500’s performance in 2023. Dubbed the ‘Magnificent Seven’ - Apple Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Amazon, and Tesla – they collectively contributed about 2/3 of the S&P 500’s return in 2023. Big tech’s growth has largely been the result of the advancement and speculation in artificial intelligence (AI). We will continue to monitor Generative AI tools and other innovative technologies, as they are rapidly advancing and had generated significant interest in 2023. We will be watching to see whether AI can help companies realize the promised productivity gains.
We will also continue to monitor ongoing progress towards a clean energy transition, including the rollout of electric vehicles, especially outside of North America, and the increasing popularity of nuclear as an alternative to fossil fuels.
As the themes of inflation, geopolitics and technology continue, and other unanticipated market events change and add elements of uncertainty, our forward-looking approach and collaborative team environment ensures that market opportunities and challenges are viewed through multiple lenses. As we enter the new year, I would like to thank you for your continued support and reiterate our commitment to continuously monitoring these themes, and others as they come up, to assist us in making the most informed investment decisions on your behalf.
