❓ What are CNC Machines? How Do They Work?
CNC stands for computer-numerical-control, a classification of machine that utilizes the power and precision of computers to machine parts.
If you have no idea what these machines do, picture this:
🤔 Think back to the last time you used a power drill, was the hole that you drilled straight? How difficult was it to pinpoint where the hole needed to be? CNC Machines work by removing material in the same way a power drill does but with the accuracy of computer code. This results in parts that are extremely accurately reproduced.
At the skyTECH CNC shop we have 2 3-axis mills and one lathe.
🦺 Originally, manual mills and lathes were the norm, requiring an operator to move the workpiece or tool utilizing a set of cranks. Nowadays, manual mills still exist, but are only used for specialized parts. Due to the speed and accuracy of CNC machines, parts can be made much faster and more accurately, even allowing operators to leave, letting the parts get made overnight without supervision.
✅ Every one of Skyline's trolleys and parts are CNC'd in house. This means that we can keep production costs down while still maintaining the extremely high level of quality across all of our parts.

Ziplining traces its roots back to gravity-defying methods of transportation and the necessity of innovation in battle.
In the mist-shrouded heights of the Himalayas, centuries ago, villagers faced a daunting challenge. Harsh terrains separated communities, with deep gorges making travel and trade between them not only difficult but perilous. They needed an ingenious solution that allowed them to connect without treading on treacherous footpaths. This necessity birthed the early ancestor of the zipline—a simple, yet effective system using ropes and pulleys to traverse the abyss. These were the first-known instances where people used gravity and ingenuity to move across vast chasms, much like a bird gliding effortlessly through the air.
As time marched forward into the age of industrialization, this principle found new ground in a drastically different landscape—the coal mines of England. During the 19th century, the burgeoning demand for coal to fuel steam engines and factories saw miners face a similar conundrum as those ancient Himalayan dwellers. They needed a method to transport heavy loads of coal from the mines swiftly and efficiently to where it was desperately required.
Enter ropeway systems, a network of cables and harnesses built expressly for moving coal. Its design was crucial; the coal baskets would glide down the cables by gravity doing the heavy lifting, making the coal's journey from mine to market faster and less labor-intensive. This innovation in logistics revolutionized the coal industry, maximizing output and minimizing time loss—principles that would soon prove vital in a very different arena: the high seas.
The turn of the 20th century brought new challenges. Navies around the world were expanding, and ships were spending more time at sea than ever before. The issue of replenishment was critical—vessels needed coal, ammunition, food, and other supplies to maintain their operations. Traditional methods of docking and resupplying were time-consuming and impractical during wartime. The concept of underway replenishment (UNREP) became the focus, inspired by the efficiency and effectiveness of the coal zip lines.
The middle of World War I saw the British Royal Navy experiment with ways to transfer goods between ships. Using a system of pulleys and cables much like the coal ziplines, they could send critical supplies across the open water, from supply ships to warships without either needing to anchor. The method was risky and rudimentary but laid the groundwork for what was to come.
Over the ensuing decades, technology advanced, and so did the techniques of UNREP. The United States Navy took the helm in developing a more sophisticated and safer system. By World War II, the use of tensioned highline transfer systems allowed a transfer of supplies not just in calm waters, but also in less forgiving sea conditions. Ships could now stay on mission longer without the vulnerability of stopping for supplies.
This evolution from ancient ziplining to naval prowess encapsulated humanity's drive to surmount obstacles through adaptation and innovation. The spirit of those Himalayan villagers lived on, proving that a simple idea can zip through time to solve complex problems of any scale.

Ever wondered where ziplining got its roots? So have I.
We have a new video on our YouTube tomorrow where I tell you the harrowing tale of the development of the zipline and how Skyline has revolutionized the path forward.

Working with Jeff and his team on building one of the first ADA-compliant rides in California was a pleasure.
I'm looking forward to seeing what we can make happen next!
We help every step of the way.
Here's what had to say about working with us!
Thanks again!
Three of the things that skyline is doing to look towards a greener future:
1. Switched to an EV truck (the Rivian pictured here) for most of our road trips and supply runs.
2. Use solar panels to allow our machine shop and office to be almost wholly off the grid. We also give our excess power (apx. 17kW) back into the grid.
3. Our new office follows the Passive House standard of principles which sharply reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Take a quick look behind the scenes as Steve works on some axles for our turbine trolley.
Even though these parts may look simple, the process is highly complex. CNC machines can achieve extremely high levels of precision. The machine seen here can make cuts down to 1/1000th of an inch, that's almost 1/4th the diameter of a strand of human hair!

The skyTECH Launcher is the ONLY DOSH APPROVED zipline launch device engineered to rapidly setup and release flyers under load when 100% ready.
This industry first is designed to work with the skyTECH Rocket trolley, and reduces the possibility of accidental departures by 90%. The skyTECH Launcher allows operators to experience greatly enhanced safety with reduced chances of guide error.
Operators who run dual cables see the most advantages as only one guide is needed to launch two flyers at the same time. This lowers staffing costs whilst increasing throughput speed equating to increased volumes and profits.

Ever think about the technology that goes into a zipline system?
Skyline Ziplines has revolutionized the industry without compromising on thrills with features such as automated photo capture and sales, digital waivers, and RFID-enabled system monitoring. Skyline ensures that riders can focus on the thrill of the adventure while the technology takes care of the rest.
The use of an electronic launching mechanism combined with magnetic gates sets Skyline apart from traditional zipline technology, making it a safer and more reliable choice for adventure enthusiasts.
Unlike competitor's ziplines that rely on manual launch systems, Skyline's electronic launch mechanism ensures every launch is precise and controlled.
The magnetic gates further enhance safety by only opening once the landing deck is cleared and brakes are reset, ensuring that riders can safely access the launching platform.
The skyTECH Safe Launch system aims to eliminate all foreseeable operator errors, reducing the risk of rider injury near zero. This level of precision and attention to detail makes Skyline's zipline technology a leader in the industry, setting new standards for safety and reliability.
